Alot of people make herp enclosures out of mdf but i think you have to seal it, cant be too harmful , i think the harm is breathing fibres from it, but if its sealed should be ok.

the main health risk is when you are sanding or cutting the stuff, from what ive been told the glue used to form the stuff is harmful under those conditions. i was wearing a t shirt and no mask last time i used it and developed a nasty rash on my arms and had a sore throat, i didnt know it was harmful until after my doctor seen it.

so in saying that i guess if you use it on an enclosure probably take precautions while building it and seal it well once finished and make sure do dust is left behind for the critters

only if your reptile is cutting the timber, the problem comes from the partical floating around in the air...I kept snake in MDF cages for years and I have not had a problem yet...however I am in the prossess of changing to plastic cages

The fine dust that is created when MDF is cut with power tools is not good for animals (humans or reptiles) that may breath it in but outside of that it is not the least bit harmful.
MDF is great in that it works well in that it can be routed cleanly and is easy to work with. I rarely use it because it is so heavy and flexes. Chipboard is far better when these qualities are of interest.
Unsealed it is like a sponge and will soak up anything... good if it is a sealant... bad if it is something like snake poop etc. Bottom line is you have to seal it for use around herps.
