Measurements :)

I don't think i have done many things quite as hard as trying to coax Savanna to either stay still long enough for me to measure her or to travel in a straight line enough that I can mark out her length... bit I got it done and she is a whopping 970mm (ish). Below is a photo I took of her next to a 50c piece to give you guys an idea of her girth.

Anyone got any hints for people trying to get an accurate measurement of their snakes?

Slough Skins are much bigger than the actual snake.
I have no idea how to measure a snake accurately, I cant even make a close estimate on length. I ask anyone who happens to be about..........how long do you reckon this one is? (usually hubby - kids have no idea either.....lol)

i use a program called snake measurer... its not 100% accurate but its a good guide!
you take a top down photo of the snake next to another object that is easily measured and you can work it out....

someone might be able to post a link the the site for download or alternatively i could email you the program....

cheers

Matt

For larger animals I let them cruise along the bottom of a brick wall and take a photo. Count the bricks then take a tape out and measure it. Not 100% accurate but it gets fairly close

For smaller critters, a large piece of foam rubber which I place the animal. You can then place a piece of perspex or glass over them. It pushes the animal into the foam with a gentle pressure. You then trace from the nose, down the spine to the tail tip. Using a piece of string, you can then measure that line (if that makes sense).

One of my snakes was really nice, he went along the side of his click clack so I measured the click clack

If you can handle them, you could use a piece of string, but I guess getting them to stay still would be difficult.

I was told to put the snake on a bit of board and draw a line from end to end and measurer that.

Have been using the program for years.
I find it pretty reliable & consistant, depending on quality of pics taken.

If it really bothers you, the easiest way I to hold a piece of string level with the snake nose and slide the string through your hands along with the snake. Hold the point on the string where it is level with the snakes tail and measure the string.
Personally, I'm not bad at estimating pythons (Colubrids are much harder) and that's good enough for me.

i just let the snake move along the bottom of a wall like someone else suggested only i let the snake go till their nose gets to the corner or doorway etc and then make a mark on the ground where the tail is. pick the snake up and put it back in its home and grab the tape mesure and measure from the corner to the mark. measureing a snake only ever really going to be an approximate lenght but i cant see a great need for and exact length

cheers
