Well, the start up costs for breeding mice and rats are fairly low, and you can always sell them (pre killed and frozen) over the net. You wouldn't need to sell many to turn a profit, so I say go for it.

Breeding reptiles for profit is (I imagine) much harder. For starters, the initial costs are much higher, then the animals themselves are harder to breed, and the babies require more care and special feeding. Obviously many people make a living from breeding reptiles, but I suspect many more have tried and failed, so do your homework before you outlay any cash.

not sure of demand in traralgon but there is a shop that deals in reptiles so i can start from there plus i can advertise there aswell
they arereally helpful and a great place for info
plus the ppl that run it actually own there own reps
not like some other shops i seen were the only ones they have is wats in the shop
great place for crickets etc too

well i thin k i will go for it with the mice /rats
as breeding reptiles i was thinking along the lines of i want to keep them why not try to breed if they do so be it if they dont no loss
i certainly will do my homework
i always suss out and research wat ever i start

as work and finances are low for xmas this year my other half came up with a brilliant idea
im gona look around for materials to build some enclosure for diff reptiles/insects
and the kids can get some reps/insects
maybe scorpion or stick insects
maybe another bluetongue
just have to find the stuff to make it all lol
does anyone have an idea wat mice/rats sell for

Do a bit of market research around Traralgon first, and see what is required in the way of mice/rats. That would be a good start I think? Cheers Cheryl

We grow rats, mice and rabbits because we couldn't get a reliable supply. At current prices there is very little profit in growing snake food because feed prices are high , presumably with the drought. The market is very seasonal and at times hobbiest "give away "surplus aniamls so you cant rely on demand. We produce about 1000 rats mice and rabbits a week which has cost over $50,000 to set up.
