I usually start on rats when i have about 2 mice left so:

a. I can use the mouse scent on the rat if they are a fussy eater

b. If the snake is really fussy and wont take the rat, it saves me from having to run down to the petstore again to get some more mice.

If your have both in the freezer or breed em I guess it doesnt really apply

cheers

I tried the rat today. Bit it many times and was interested but didn't end up taking it. That was a fuzzy. Has had a pinky rat in the past. Will try with a pinky rat tonight and see how that goes, and if not, back to the shop tomorrow to get some sub adult mice.

How often do you give your 21mth old a rat then?
depends on the size of the feed. if its something that makes him look like he's going to explode (like about a 110g) then i'd usually wait maybe 2 weeks, but if he has a little feed (like a 60g) then i'd feed him after a week. i usually only give him 1 of whatever size at a feeding but thats only cos i'm usually in bed by the time he STARTS eating it! if he figures it out before 4 hours later he might get 2 lol . i think he's brain dead but i luv him

I gave my diamond a couple of pinky rats instead tonight and he looked like he was gonna eat them, but ended up refusing. He has never refused a feed in the 5 months I have had him. Maybe I should

A: Wait another week until he is really hungry
B: Go back to mice
C: Rub a mouse over the rat so he picks up the mouse scent
D: Eat the rat myself and show him how its done (well, maybe not)

you could try rubbing a mouse on the rat if you've still got them there but i think it's best to leave them a week or at least a few days before offering again...that seems to be what most people suggest anyway. i think it can sometimes stress them out when being harassed by a dead rodent too often lol

Thanks Zo. I am glad you didn't say D. I wasn't looking forward to consuming a rat myself. Phew. Thanks lol
