The only problem I could see with micro-chipping is that in a reptile I imagine they would be fairly easy to remove?(maybe someone can answer that) so if someone wanted what you have badly enough then I doubt it would stop them.

in the thread that was talking about a vet called david vella there was a link to his site which had caresheets and such and it mentioned that snakes should be mirco chipped (even though most people dont)

so im guessing that he would be able to do it.........

no idea on cost thou

i think mirco chipping is an awesome idea and if people on this site start mirco chipping their animals and getting them checked when buying / selling animals then we might be able to at least hinder these people who are stealing reptiles

im not sure either, are they put in the same way as a dog or cat ?

like any solution it would not be 100% effective as there are alwasy wasy to get around things if someone is determined enough.

i heard that a micro chip can be disabled with electric shock like a stun gun or something. does anyone know if this is the case ?

It sounds a good idea in theory but I don't think many people have access to the chip readers to make them identifiable. And from what I've heard the chips can be removed and even inserted in a different specimen.

Then there is the issue of different chips and detectors. Detectors can only read there type of chip so if an animal has a certain type of chip it may not be detected by a different detector at all.

well for starters after it was chipped if your snakes did get taken it would mean every vet would have to start scanning all the snakes they see for them to get picked up.

so yeah it would be ok but even if it had one then it dont mean it will get found

i have had several mates that had dogs either stolen or lost and have never seen again most of them stolen

and to be honest both my dogs have been chipped and have been to the vet several times and not once have they been checked so i could have stolen them for all they know

so yes good in theory

If someones determined enough to steal your herps they will find a way to get rid of the microchip, they obviously dont care much for the animal only the money from it so theyd find a way.

a lot of vets don't have microchip scanners and the ones that do may have a different type of scanners that only read the type of chip that their vet practise uses. And from what I hear its pretty easy to remove a chip from an animal and re-insert it in another even. And even if a vet has a compatable scanner that will read that particular type of chip, thats assuming thieves would take stolen snakes to a vet. Maybe if they sold it to someone else it may eventually end up at a vet at some stage. But the chances it would be scanned successfully are remote at best. Sad but true.
Microchipping is probably only useful in a research situation for monitoring animals and not really a 'security solution'
Getting some high tech cameras and surveillance gear with alarms etc to monitor your house and collection would be a much better option and much more secure. And in the event that you may actually catch some scumbag thieves in the act of stealing your animals a shotgun and shovel may also come in handy
