Always surprised by the number of people that who have the need to defrost rats in a plastic bag.
My snakes might be different but they don't give a rats if their food is wet or dry.

I just tip the frozen rats into a bucket of hot water, wait about 30 minutes and then down the hatch.
The water held in the rats hair can only be good for the snakes and being wet it would make it easier for them to swallow.

Same here.

It would take hours to defrost the centre of a bag of 10 that way.

Great idea if you only have a few to defrost. I'd need a 20L ice-cream tub if I did it like that!
(yes, I know it would work the same in a bucket with a lid)

Good thinking mate! All you need now is a heating element set to your desired temp and you'd get a water efficient version!

That can wash away the scent and make it even harder for trouble feeders to feed. All good for good feeders though.

Tip them straight into hot water... no bag needed. They thaw quickly and very evenly, and the snakes don't give a rats if they're wet. I've been doing it for 30 years, never a problem, and as has been stated, the wet fur can improve hydration. I have never had any problems with difficult feeders either, in fact wetting the animal with hot water probably enhances the stimulating smells.

I also do something similar - I just dont use the ice cream container or the bag.

BUT.... for those of us thawing mince for monitors this would be great beacuse I always get water into the bag containing the mince.

wow i really did not relise how many people use bags and how many people thow it straight in the water. I mean i've seen it done but i never thought of the hydration part of it before. But with out bags dont the rats still float.
ps thanks 888 feel free to patent it but i already have one . he he

i use a mug-like thermos with boiling water, and mash into it a snuggly fitting plastic cup in which i put any this from a pinky to a hopper in and put the lid on. i always tried to avoid a blanched skin effect that i get with hot water directly applied. my method works well for small singular items and evenly defrosts. note: this is a safe, but not the quickest method.

yup I do it this way for my mice & as a first timer snake handler I just thought it was the easiest method . I have never had a problem.

I can believe that theory cause i am a new snake owner and the first few go's of feeding i didnt get the pinkies wet for my BHP and fed them "dry", he ate fine, but lately i have been just chucking them in warm/hot water straight and he goes crazy like in a feeding frenzy style!!
