My stimmie finally ate!!!!

Well I thought I should let everyone know that Boa (my 6 month old stimmie) has finally eaten!! I went and got a young fuzzy rat for her (I thought it would be to big for her) put it in her enclosure and it was gone 45mins later. Thanks to everyone that was giving tips and ideas on how to feed her, I think she got sick of looking at thawed mice. But now that she is on rats I have been told that she will grow quite fast.

Just a few more questions but: Do I need a thermostat for a floresent U.V light? And, what temp do keep her enclosure at in summer?

Thanks for everyones help!!!!!!

You don't need a UV light but a thermostat is a must. How have you been regulating the heat up until now?
I would keep the enclosure at around 30c and the only way to ensure the temp is constant is with a thermostat.
If you need any help, that offer still stands to check out your set up.

You should use a thermostat for you heat source.Position the heating element on one side of the enclosure so you have a heat gradient (one side warmer than the other).Your snake can then choose what temperature it prefers at any given time.

UV and flourescent lights dont emit much heat so they wont need to be thermostatically controlled. You simply turn these lights on for the required hours to mimic the natural photo-period.

Rather than fork out excess amounts on continually purchasing UV lights (because the UV spectrum is short lived) you would be better off to take the snake out into sunlight several hours a week. And to mimic natural photo-periods just open a nearby window to let in light.

Stimmies are also a nocturnal species,so they do not require as much UV as other species of pythons. They should get adequate calciums etc from feedings of whole animals.

Greebo, I have a thermostat for the heat source but I was told that I need one for a U.V light as well. If I have anymore trouble I'll let you know, thanx.

Craig, you don't need an uv light for a Stimmie.
As already mentioned they are nocturnal, and bit of sunlight a couple a times a week would be plenty, if you were worried.

You shouldn't have to use a UV light for stimmies but then theres a bit of a debate on whether or not they are needed for pythons, but you definately don't need a thermo for the UV light.

Yeah Seth, I sure know about the debate, in particular about Diamond Pythons, needing it, as I was one that always was in support of it.
Have changed my mind about it a bit, as I have since met a breeder with about 20 or so Diamonds for over 10 years, all indoors, uses only on old fashion light globe in each enclosure for heating, and has all healthy snakes.
