| | | New fish tank lizard/turtle/fish enclosure. Now with Pics!
Hi all,
I got my mates old 4 footer tank and stand and have siliconed in place a glass divider so it now has a water section (1/3rd of the tank, 5inches deep) the rest of the tank will be land.
Im just curious if in the tank i can keep 2 x central beardeds, 1 x eastern water dragon and 2 little turtles?
Also, what would be the best substrate for the land section as to make all 3 types of animals happy and healthy. Will soil/potting mix be good for this? and im thinking of having some gravel for about 5 inches wide from the top of the water divider to provide a hard surface for the turts.
Any help on the subject would be great.
And as a size comparison for the animals they have all got the same size mouths.
Cheers, Alan.

Alan,
This will not work - the turtles will snap at your dragons' tails and toes if they're in the water. Also, the Central Beardies need a drier and slightly warmer temps thatn eastern species.

Hi Alan,
I don't know too much about this type of thing, but I would imagine soil may not be suitable, due to the problem of it harbouring bacteria, and it would make it hard to do the weekly cleaning. Maybe marine carpet?
If soil is okay to use, make sure you use peat moss, fertilizer free. All potting mixes are unsuitable due to the chemicals. I use kilarney brand of peat moss for my spiders, by far the best I've tried, and chemical free.
Anyway, I'm sure someone else has some opinions on soil as substrate? I would imagine it would not be suitable.?

So what should i use as a substrate then? it needs to cover about 2 square feet and be about 4-5 inches deep?
Also, what about having just the turtles with the eastern? i have seen this in alot of zoo enclosures, thats where i initially got the idea from and they seem to live in harmony in there. None of the animals will be longer than 10cm when introduced.
Any more thoughts please...
cheers, Alan.

Ok, instead of the centrals, can i have some blue tongues in there? They are in a 2 foot tank at them moment and dont take up much room so im thinking they could go in with the eastern and some turtles. Is this setup ok???

Substrate is pine mulch with a layering of peat moss and in the water section i have normal aquarium gravel with a mini powerhead filter and 50watt heater.
Lighting is a sylvania reptistar 5.0, 1 daylight basking spot and one I.R night basking spot.
There is one spider plant at the moment but there is some ferns and others to come.
Cheers, Alan.

Mate that is excatly how I am building a Green Tree Frog enclosure. NO DON"T put turtles in there as they will munch ANYTHING that goes in the water!!!!!! The beardies do like dryier area's though, you could do that by using sand under the heat lamp end then for the plants, I am going to plant mine VERY heavily for my frogs and run a misting system on a timer. The substrate will be expanded clay ( hydro supplier) and a layer of peat moss. I will use about 2 inches of expanded clay then an inch of sand so the water will dain back into the pond area via an inlet at the bottom of the pond and I will plant the plants into this and the cover with about an inch of peat moss.I will also put rocks and so forth but alot of fearns and broad leave plants. For your tank I would suggest short sturdy plants as water dragongs love to climb them and sit on top of them.

I would just put some water dragons in that, it would make an awseome display enclosure...as long as you can keep it clean. Maybe you could consider putting a small species of fish in the water section for some variety. Or maybe you could put another barrier in the middle of the tank so that you have two enclosures, one side for the water dragons and one side for your beardies, although it would not last them as they grow bigger. Just some of my random ideas for you.

Water Dragons will grow too large for a 4 foot tank very quickly indeed.

No they won't. They will live happily in there for a year or 2, depends how often you feed them and if you cool them from thier first year.We have 4 here in a 4 foot tank with sand as the substrate and a 4 ltrs water dish with a rock in it as well as a few plants and they love it. Mind you we are not powerfeeding our dragons, we can't afford one of them getting to big and blowing flames out his nose!!!!!!!
