hi guys ! im new to this forum & new to herp. i plan on getting my 1st snake in a months time or so, but b4 i go out & get one, i have a few questions.
firstly, im tihnking of getting a jungle carpet as a first snake, some ppl have suggested the Antaresia sp as a first snake, while others suggested a good first snake is basically what u want. (obviously nothing vemonous lol)
1) what size tank would be good to house one of these ? ill start of with a
yearling but i want to get a tank that will do for the rest of its life.
2) which type of heat source is best to use in the tank ? sum say heat
pads, some say heat globes. which is more economical to run ?
3) how much would i expect to pay for a black & gold jugle yearling ?
(AWESOME AWESOME x1000000 snake!! .....oh lord i tihnk i jsut wet
myself)
finnally, anyone in melb breed jungles ? i might even consider other species if i cant get me a black n gold.
hope u guys can help me out with some of these things !
cheers
Shaun

I think that there are some jungles on herptrader ATM.... I'll check.....YEP!! $400 each in Melb. Give them a buzz - they might be able to hold one for you until you get your stuff organised if you pay them now
Good luck and welcome to the site

G'day skunk, welcome aboard.
Firstly, is it an actual glass tank you're after ? Glass tanks usually dont hold heat well and they open from above. Snakes tend to stay nervous when their enclosure opens from above. Its much better to build a timber enclosure with front glass sliding doors. Timber holds heat in the cage a lot better. If it is a yearling that you'll be getting then 1m long, 50cm high and 50cm wide are good dimensions for the cage. As an adult i would recommend 1.4m long 60cm wide and 1m high for its enclosure.
I wouldn't recommend a heat pad as its main source of heat. These are really designed to heat surfaces. You need to heat the air within the enclosure and allow a thermal gradient so it has a warm and cool end. I use normal house globes for day heat and ceramic globes for night heat. Both wired to a thermostat. You can use the globes in combination with the heat pad, but the heat pad should never be placed inside the cage. Place it underneath the enclosure. For a yearling Jungle i would imagine you'll be paying $500-600.

hi bex,
thanks for that ! yup i did check out herp trader too !! im just "lookin" around right now..cant buy anything untill iv gotten my license ! those jungles are sooooo nice !
serpenttongue,
i did speak to the guys down at the reptile joint & he did tell me that glass tanks dont hold heat as well too. i was thinking of getting them proper melamine vivariums for the snake.
which will i be best of doing ? going all out & buying a tank that will suit the snake for when it grows up to its full length ? or just buy a small click clack type container & keep it in there untill it gets bit bigger b4 buying a fullsized enclosure for the snake ? (read that if a small snake it put into a big tank, it gets stressed)
will a 4ft long x 2ft high x 2ft wide be enough for an adult jungle ?i dont know measurements in cm.. LOl
reason being for those dimensions is coz i have a 2 tier stand thta is that size & the tank will go on there. (got my 4x2x2 fish tank on the top, so i firuged it be nice to have a snake tank on the bottom)
IF i were to keep the snake in a click clack type tank, how do i heat it ? being a small pasltic tank, i wont be abble to hang a light globe off it ? lol
which size of snake is better to get ? a hatchie or a yearling ? (another newb question) i just want to make sure thta what i get is feeding & all is well !!
cheers

you can't really go out and buy a cage that will suit the snake for life. Cages are something you'll have to upgrade as you go.

soulweaver, whys is that ? i dont mean to sound rude or anything, but im just trying to save money lol..if i bought one that will house it for life, i wouldnt spend so much on a 2nd enclosure.
unless i get soo edicted to them i reach the stage where i myself will have to move into a vivarium!
cheers

i think my personal opion is that start basic melamine cage I started with 3x2x2 and done the job for a hatchling to juvienile, they are cheap then you can save and get a banked unit. I found although my limited knowledge is that you can house a sub adult alright in 1, but then you have to consider wherethere its arborel ( tree climber??) or ground dweller

farmdog, well i was thinking of getting a jungle carpet. those things climb yeah ? 2ft high enough for it to climb around on ? cant get a higher tank coz no space ! highest i can get is a 2.5ft high one, length is a max of 4ft for the tank.

Skunk, this is what i do. I have the snakes "adult" cage up and running. Then i put the young snake in a clickclack or similar container and then this goes in the adult cage. I place the container in the centre of the larger cage where the temp will be around 28, making sure that the snake doesnt get too hot.
If you dont have a large cage thats wired up then you can keep it in a small container with a heat mat placed under half the container so only half the container floor gets heated and the snake has a warm and cool end.

Skunk jungles are highly arboreal as is most pythons. 2ft high is fine for a young python, even subadults.

Skunk, we discussed this a few days ago with another newbie that is hoping to get a Diamond Python. I think you'll find much of the info you need in this thread: http://www.aussiepythons.com/index.p...ewtopic&t=7885
Of course, if you have other questions - feel free to ask!

I keep my jungle in a 3.5x4x2 ft enclosure. I dont think 2ft would be high enough for it. IMO

The only stupid question is the question that is not asked. Yes, you CAN stop at ONE snake. | | |
