Night Heating........

What's the story with heating at night??

I'm South of Adelaide and the temps at night are anywhere between 3 - 7 degrees (obviously outside) it still gets pretty cool in my house. What would you guys recommend for heating my 5 month old MD? Do I even heat at all??

Currently I'm leaving the heat lamp on, it's set to a thermostat on 25 degrees during the day and I leave it on all night....(it turns off and on once the temp reaches of course but at the current night temps it seems to be on more than off at night).........I will keep doing so unless advise otherwise......any thoughts?

That temp should be fine for it's first year.

I'm in Adelaide too and that's the set up I have my Diamond Python hatchling in at the moment. I'm really new to all of this but from what I've read so far it seems ok to keep a hatchling with the heat (thermo controlled) on around the 25 degree mark. Next year I won't keep the vivarium so warm and will let it get cooler.

I got mine from the Reptile Centa out at Modbury, they were really helpful and friendly. They still have around 8 DP hatchlings at $400... but they actually had an ad in the Trading Post that the DPs were on special for $300 if you mention the ad, if you wanted some extra incentive to get a DP so soon after your MD . Not the reason why I bought my DP, I'd decided it was time about a fortnight ago and the ad just made me think, it's meant to be. lol.

You said you live down south and I know there is a reptile place (or two?) down Christies Beach way, although I live near Port Adelaide and didn't feel like venturing so far south.

dunno bout 25 degrees?

I read somewhere that daytime temps for DP's should be 26-28, dropping to 25 for nights... Not sure if this info is correct but my DP is always under the basking light. I have never seen him retreat to the 'cool' zone. Maybe knock your temp up 1 degree, and as its his 1st year you shouldn't have to hibernate him... Ask soulweaver though, he is very helpful although he may call you a goose
