Hi serenaphoenix - I hadn't thought about the watching bit - wasn't designed as that type of question - more about the health and wellbeing of our lovely lady than the ghoulish bit.... I haven't seen any vision of people feeding live food - wouldn't be my type of entertainment! That's just wrong....

Ok i don't know if that was directed at me, BUT we watch this stuff every day E.G animal planet. I don't see any different to watching it on tv to watching it right infront of me. Least they don't know whats happening and are not scared out of there brains trying to escape!!

P.s i am 100% against animal Cruelty.

Remember that insects are crunched up and killed immediately by their predators. They're dead in one or two seconds. With rodents it can sometimes take up to 5 mins for them to die. Rodents often squeal their heads off while they're being suffocated to death very slowly. There really is nothing big or cool about watching a python constrict and suffocate a rodent and the snake gets no more satisfaction out of it than suffocating a thawed rodent.

I don't think so. Although I don't recommend live feeding, I do believe we should try to keep our animals as natural as possible.

If your pyton is happy to eat thawed there is no need to reason to feed live. As a matter of fact I find its easier to get your python to eat thawed because you can heat it right up and make it smell good for the animal.

Also (as far as I know) frozen mice available from pet shops have to be gassed to death so you know at least they kind of had a peaceful death.

At the end of the day its up to you how and what you feed your animal but, for me, if there is any risk that either the python or food item could be in pain or injured from the procedure (such as live feeding) I would avoid it.

I know what you mean, we get a live sheep or cow occasionally and the whole family sits around the table. Its not natural for us to be eating meat from the butchers. So every sunday its slaughter the animal at the table night. Keeps the kids mean and we have so much natural fun.

When Rats get the upper tooth

I used to have a lot of other photos but can't seem to find them at the moment will have a look later. This is not my photo, not sure where I got it from. Feeding live is illegal in most, if not all states (definitely illegal in QLD).

I think buying food from the super market is INCREDIBLY unnatural we should all be forced to go bush and hunt with spears and swords like the good old days!!!

healthy reasons

Hi

I don't care at all for the feelings of mice or any other snake/lizard/bird/native animal food (including sharks if they are in a sharks environment) but you must care about the stress on your captive pet. All captives suffer stress and when their prey has a virus or parasite, then the predator consumes the parasite/virus and suffers the consequences.

In the wild animals eat other animals and get parasites from all of their prey and stress from the thought of survival in a "dog eat dog" world (the bush), but this is acceptable to them, however when they are in a cage (no matter how big) they always can get to the external limits and want to go beyond them. In the wild a river or mountain would be the only barrier and they can try to get around these. This causes stress which enhanses the problems caused by parasites.

It is fun to watch (when your pet is an extremely fast monitor) ** but you shouldn't feed your animals live food becaus eit is against the law ( animal rights stuff for feed animals). However if you do make sure it is parasite free

** note a large large lace monitor can catch and consume a day old chick in 2 seconds when the monitor is warm, but this is a risk of parasite infection.

Lastly, a mouse or rat can severly injure your pet and no amount of justice at all can be given to anything that hurts your pet.

Keep your snakes sage, warm and healthy, feed them thawed food.

Cheers

Steve

NB I am not encouraging feeding live food because this is not legal.
