I aquired a frame that would make a good dual cage for either the stimmies or childreni.
I've always used universal rock backing previously so thought i would give make a backing a go to see the difference. For a 1st attempt i think i've done alright using a general frame, foam, expander foam, sanding, grouting, sealing and painting and sealing again. Though cheaper for smaller applications i think i would stick the the universal or similar for larger project from a time and effort point of view. But i'll be the first to admitt i'm not a gifted artist with ablilities
I'll start it off with a series of pics for the different stages, i also tried a different heating method compared to the rest of my cages. Some different options for you folks.

Once i had the general shape i was after, i grouted it with a coloured grout. The gave more body to the backing and hide any sanding blemishes. I sealed with a few coats of BONDCRETE sealer then painted with 3 primarly colour (black, brown and light brown) for various areas abd effect. Finally sealed with lot of coates with the sealant and bingo - a rock backing....

Now for the heating idea.
I've always used ceremic heating from above. Most of my Antersia spend alot of time on the ground though they do climb at times. So for the heating of this particular cage i thought i would try something different.
I've gone for heat cord routed into the floor in opposing ends of each cage so when on the heat the animals will be on opposing side for a visual effect. Due to the cage having a shelf attached to tried two form of routing to achieve this.
1st. Standard routing on the top shelf as it was removable at that stage with a sheet of mansonite over the top.
2nd. Couldn't get the router into where i wanted it so i used an idea from a mate from this site (lancinator) and cut to size a concrete type material and glued it onto the masonite for later positioning. Very cheap and easy option. I get a great gradient from 31 degree for half and 20 for the other side.
Pictures tell a thousand words.

And finally the electrics
I am trying the habitstat range as i run microclimate for every other cage. (it is a trial project cage anyway ).
I running the habitstat 100watt with 2 4.3m heat cords and a dual thermometre. The complete setup is run off the top cage with the heat probe flat on the ground and not higher so it measure the actual contact surface and not the air temp. for lighting i am running the DIY Slimline 6W T4 Linkable Fluorescent fitting. It's so easy to fit and is idiot proof (I did it) Though i am waiting on an electrician mate to wire both to the junction box above the thermostat and running off one cord to the power cord. Once that is done in the pythons go.
Hope this helps other and gives some different options to try.
Yommy

Yommy, That shows some great talent, Well done they look fantastic,Wish I had the ability.
Beats the whit malimine look any day, I have attached a few pics of the last 2 I built, I used an industrial fridge duel zone thermostat 1 zone running the heat mats and the other running the lamps, I am in the middle of making 2 other tanks that are a bit smaller to house my B/W Jungles and a Centralian. Have not done anrthing with the inside as yet.

They came as seperate items that are available at electrical wholesalers, because they use 2 temp probes and run 2 different heat functions they are a bit on the expensive side at $220 each but they also have a built in warning alarm if the temp goes over or under a user set parimeter. I have found them to be reliable and it also means you dont need the themometre in the tank

The Brand name is Carel and all the details can be found at http://www.carel.com/carelcom/web/en...4&id_mercato=3
I will have these running on all 5 of my enclosures by the end on the week. Very simple to wire but the programing can be a bit confusing, If you end up going down this course and have any probs drop me a message.
