Other herping pet shops could learn a lot from Upmarket and Pails.

As for the "too expensive" claim to me this is not overly valid. Pet shops cannot compete with non shop front outlets but provide a different service (eg you see exactly what you are buying as you purchase it.) On the animal front purchasing directly from the breeder (eg: through the Herp Trader) should be and generally is cheaper but you won't get to see as much of a range when you make your purchase.

Pet shops are in business to make a profit. If they are doing a good job, their prices will appropriately reflect this.

theres a few real dodgy looking ones but upmarket seems like one of the better ones ie: its clean unlike some others and the animals look happy. and me buying that lacey will probably be doing it a favor considering he wont have all the idiots pointing and staring going omg its a goanna and he will be in an outside enclosure free to do what he likes in peace

I think pails is pretty cheap in pet shop standards. Juvie coastals for $160, thats cheap compared to most pet shops.

Petshops

Unfortunately the majority of pet shops are dodgy. I have only been into upmarkets a few times though and have always found their animals kept in excellent conditions.

If anything the only complaint I had was that the focus appeared to be more on the fish. Sounds like they have changed that and I look forward to heading in there shortly.

I stand by what I said in that post. It is not the same as what Cris said. The shop in question in that thread is not the same as the shops being discussed in this one. The shop being discussed in the other thread is nothing more than a torture chamber. As I said in the post you point out, the majority of shops which sell reptiles in Victoria are bad, sell poached animals, etc etc. Saying "the majority" is not the same as saying "all". I've never said that they -all- poach -most- of their animals. -Some- poach -most- of their animals. -Most- poach -at least- -some- of their animals.

The problems common to -all- shops include the lack of quarantine (it's just not possible), the increased stress to animals due to the extra move and being put on display, usually immediately after being moved, etc etc.

I do not in any way wish to imply that I'm saying anything at all good about Upmarket Aquariums, but I didn't make the choice to jump into this thread and hadn't planned to comment in it.
