plastic caging

I've been looking into plastic caging for a while now, and I've gotten nowhere.

For those of you who aren't firmiliar with the topic, or think I'm talking about tubs this is what I'm after...

as far as i know (unless someone would care to enlighten me?) there are no manufacturers of these kinds of cages in the country and hence the only products available are expensive imports, 500+ for a decent size cage before heating/lighting.

So if there is anyone who could provide me with any info on plastic caging of this kind it'd really be appreciated.[/img]

Jonno,
Are those Boaphile cages?
Look pretty smart don't they.

I think you are correct, at the moment the best option is the URS plastic viv's.
I can see further down the road people taking up the challenge of producing different designs such as above here in Australia, but I reckon it might be a few years away.
So, for now if you really want viv's like those above, then you might have to bite the bullet and import them direct from the US.

Neil

Yes Neil, they're boaphiles. What I wouldn't give for a nice wall full of them!

Having looked at all the commercially available moulded plastics here I can tell you I'd be better off getting them custom built by a local plastics company, and even then they're still quite pricey.

I've also looked into getting a bunch imported from the states... Everything considered, taxes, freight, exchange rates! it's a very expensive exercise. Simply not worth it

hmmm... do we have any plastics manufacturers on the member list?

I've considered building them myself, most of the US companies started out in someones garage. Unfortunately freight really kills us here in Aus. Small scale freighting of something that bulky is just not viable.

have looked into material costs magpie?

ive been quoted 350 for 8mm thick pvc to build a 1000x600x600 cage. Haven't looked into polyethylene all that much but from what i can figure it's a little more expensive.

I have visited URS and seen all their enclosures banked up and they are magnificent and when you mention material costs alone like that basketcase the URS price is quite reasonable. They also had a number made up of 1200x600x600 with microclimates specially for GTP's. they would handle high humidity perfectly, easy to clean and probably good insulation as well.

This is what I came up with instead.
These tubs go right up to about 150L, which is bloody big, you could easily keep an adult carpet in one.

Magpie,

Would you mind giving us a breakdown of costs involved to build one that size?
What are the dimensions of that one?

Cheers Neil

Approx 600x400x400.
Tub - $30ish. You could buy a cheaper one, but I like the fact that it's opaque, and very easy to drill / route.
Hinges - $2.50 for the pair.
Glass - $2. Picture frame from BigW.
Ply wood - $15. enough to make 6 cages.
Screws / fixings - $12.50, but enough to make 2 cages with plenty left over of some sizes.
So it cost me about $90 to make two, but each extra one you make gets a bit cheaper.
The really big tubs were about $90 I think and would cost about $30 for all the other bits I reckon.

I put a 100W globe in there and after 15 minutes it was softening the top. So I put a 10W globe in and it runs fine. Maintains about 34 in the warm area with ambient at 26 or so. I think a downspot would be the best bet, running on a dimmer / dimmer stat.

The only way to duplicate the likes of the Boaphile cages is to have them moulded, you can build them out of sheets of plastic but it defeats the object if you have glued seams etc. The tooling costs for having moulded cages made runs into many $1000's. They are definitely the way to go from a hygiene perspective.

Thanks for the run down Mags.
They certainly have potential for those with a flair for DIY, and the cost savings are good.
Cheap to heat going on that, mind you, you are in Cairns ! LOL!

Cheers Neil

These guys have huge plastic tubs. You could put any sized snake in them.
You could even put adult scrubs in a rack system with those 1500 litre tubs

Check em out' http://www.teamsystems.net.au/plastic/storage.php

Not sure of the prices though as they arent displayed.
and their australian...
