Forget about the 'they live on it in the wild' comments, the fact is they don't live on such LOOSE sand, so don't tend to ingest it like they do if they live the entire time on loose play type sand. As mentioned, they also lick to taste their surroundings.
You now know what can happen on sand, its up to you whether you want to take that risk.

...also, for future reference, if you are concerned about your little one not crapping give it a luke warm bath - will usually crap almost immediately...

paper really is the best option... at least until the dragon is 12 months old.
I've been told by a petshop - use sand it's fine, use walnut granuals there fine, use repti-bark it's made for dragons... the truth is they are out to make money - newspaper is almost free (so if we all used it, who would the 'reptile product people' make their money from??) NONE OF THESE ARE GOOD FOR YOUNGE DRAGONS
