put the lid on a piece of scrap timber and clamp it down onto it then drill the hole's so thjat way the lid wont crack and it dont matter if you drill into the scrap timber

You need to be careful either way, I always have drilled mine and although i have had some minor cracks on some harder plastics never anything to worry about. With softer plastics you would need to be really brutal to crack it and most of the better containers are made from softer plastics IMO.
If you put something underneath to support the side where the drill bit comes out you shouldnt have a problem.
Melting plastic fumes are nasty i would only do that outside with a fan and/or a proper mask.

Definitely a soldering iron but if you use a drill be very careful as it is very easy to crack those hard plastic tops. As has been said put it on a piece of timber and make sure it can't move and take it slow.

You can get a soldering iron from super cheap auto for about $8, not a bad liitle thing for light applications like that

i made up a jig with a piece of timber i marked out and measured it so i had all my hole's even on the wood and then the first lid i cut i went threw the plastic and into the wood a little so it leaves a small hole in the timber that way the next lid i drill i just get out my jig i made and put it under and just drill into those little hole's save's me having to measure it everytime and mark it..
I have noticed drilling it free hand can make the hole's all over the place and very uneven so it make's the setup look like it was rushed and not done properly JMO

I use a piece of pegboard when I solder my holes.
Makes a great template for spacing evenly distributed holes.

id just drill it

have done with mine

but do take it slowly well dont push down on the drill much as i have made a crack or 2

i found it easier to have it on the container drill going pretty fast but very little pressure at all on the drill worked fine for me

however i would suggest clamping the lid down somehow
