puzzling question

I have wonderd this for a while so i thought ide post it.

Does the jacobsons organ work in water? Bcause in every documenteray it says they pickof "air particles" but wat about aquatic snakes.Do they rely on other senses or do they pick up "water particles" ? There is an obvious differance between the 2 particles so im wondering *** do they do ?

i [THINK], j, that aquatic snakes, much like sharks and platapus can detect electrical currents from the bodys of fish etc. not sure its 'smelling' exactly. I am sure however, that someone will know exactly how it all works and point out my misconceptions also that everyone will have a point to make on this interesting subject.

It is my understanding that the Jacobsons organ is effective even in water as can be witnessed with snakes that inhabit swampy areas such as the "cotton mouths" or other snake species that prey on frogs etc.So my guess is that this would be the case and they can infact pick up scent particles under water. However those species I have just acreditted for are not underwater for any great deal of time.In the case of full aquatic sea snakes/kraits I would expect the same to be true, though I have no exact answers for you lol.

It sure does, the jacobsons organ reads scent particle deliverd by the tongue. As long as the tongue goes in and out the jacobsons organ is "smelling" regardless of the outside environment.
I think in snakes that live in or around water it would be more senstive and more developed for obvious reasons.

perhaps the jacobsons organ can also detect electrical fields? consider the age old trick of eluding tracker dogs by moving thru water!

OK i just watched a "built for the kill" and a kingsnake was tracking down a rat. The rat wen through water "trying to mislead any predators" but thjis doesnt work as they leave secreations in the water which the snake picks up. The jacosan organ must work in and above water.
Is this the answer to my question. Could we have some more experianceed ppl's step forward.

cheers, jeremy
