Pygmy monitor theory

I was reading the pro exotics ackie care sheet. They pretty much think that pygmy monitors determin their sex after hatching and usually only one male apears in any social group. I was wondering if anyone who breeds pygmy monitors in aus agrees with this theory.

I disagree, I bought 2 as hatchlings from the same clutch they both turned out to be male.

The theory only works I they have been seperated into their groups - for example, the theory is that if your two were seperated to a tub where only the two of them were together from the time they hatched then they would be a pair...

...obviously I have no idea whether this theory is correct but it seems to be quite a common belief amongst overseas breeders...

It is something beleived by some very good monitor breeders in the USA and Europe. So far the stats are very good.
It is not good to say it is BS when so many VERY experienced BREEDERS of monitors have found it to be true. Australian breeders in general have not been breeding monitors in numbers yet.
I suggest you contact Pro Exotics or Frank Retes and ask them for their opinions on the matter. Or post a thread on www.kingsnake.com monitor forum to hear their views.

I tend to agree with Euan - I have heard very little on the topic from Aussie keepers and would be good to hear but it is a VERY common theory that seems to show good results from the large breeders overseas...

...with that in mind I would tend to believe it rather than discount it straight off the bat as I have yet to read anything by other large breeders which say that this is false...

...does anyone have a link to some stats or anything on the topic?

yes Frank Retes is the man as far as monitors go, all reptiles in facted.
hes has proven that reptiles dont need uv light and i consider him to be one of the best in the world as far as breeding and keeping reptiles.
he has bred many thousands of pygmy monitors and many many genarations.
you will look at reptiles in a diffrent way after talking to him

varanus.net is gone now i think,i cant get on to it anyways,so correct me if im wrong, and i wouldnt discount the theory of the sexual turn out of monitors unless u prove it to be right or wrong, quite a few experienced breeders believe it is true so u cant rule it out,and yes u have to have them together from when they hatch,u can talk to frank retes about it on the monitor forum at kingsnake.com ,im going to keep a couple of groups of hatchies this season and see if it happens, been meaning to for the last couple of seasons but keep selling them
