I was wondering if someone could post a link towards the QLD licensing regs... I can find something saying that a license costs $50 a year, but nothing about what you can keep (species list), what classes there are, etc.
Thanks!

Thanks! | Heres a link to their legislation: http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/LE...03/03SL375.pdf
Search reptile licensing once your acrobat reader downloads the whole file.

good luck! different people you ask have different answers. It's a real mess up here. It took me 2 months to find out if I needed a license to breed my spiders, as they are now protected here. ask 3 people, get 3 answers. I couldn't seem to obtain even a printed copy of the code of conduct from our local EPA
The reason it's like this is in March they changed the legistlation, and no one seems to know what's going on. The link also doesn't work half the time, I asked them why and they said because it was being changed all the time. Hopefully it's up and running now.

Also of interest maybe the following link. Anyone interested in what snakes are found around SE Qld can click on 'living with wildlife' then 'snakes of brisbane'. I have saved this as a favourite in the hope that I will see something in the wild that will require me to immediately shoot home to do a search on whatever the bleeding hell I saw. Not gonna hold my breath though. http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/nature_conservation/wildlife |

| Spiders are protected? What exactly does 'protection' mean?

That sucks. I reckon you should be allowed to collect spiders for yourself, but not for sale. How many people squish spiders? I know they aren't going to pass a law saying you can't kill a spider, so why not collect?

No, the Australian tarantulas are protected, not all spiders, and also scorpions. by protected, it means the harvestors that take them for petstores now have to have a license to do so, and the pet stores who sell them now need the same license they have to have to sell reptiles. Basically they have reptile status, but anyone can apply for a collectors license. You don't need a license to own them though.

Very good move I reckon, because so many were being collected for the pet trade before, and now it's regulated a bit more. They have to submit books saying which species are collected as well. This has it's drawbacks though as most species of tarantula (bird-eating spiders) aren't identified, so they really need to put more work into getting some named if they want collectors to be able to ID them properly. It's also supposed to stop the problem of people going to a pet store but having no idea what species they are buying, but I have the feeling this is still happening considering the amount of emails I get from people asking me to ID their spider they bought.

| Ha! more like $50 for 5 years! and we don't have class 1 class 2 ect. You can pretty much keep any australian reptile that isn't rare endangered or hard to keep(mainly elapids & colubrids) on a recreational wildlife licence. If you want I could try and scan and post the list of restricted speices which you need a specialist licence for.

Are there any elapids on the recreational licence? If you could put that up in your gallery or something, that'd be great if it's not too much hassle! I just can't believe they dont have some simple links on their page  Appreciate the help mate, thanks

I'll try and scan them tonight, and I'm sorry but there aren't any Elapids that can be kept on a normal recreational licence. An upgrade to a specialist licence is an extra $150 I think but you must be able to show good knowlage of herpetoligy( I can pm the exact details if you like).
