Question for Jeff Hardy

Jeff,
Can you tell me what is going to happen in regards to Green Pythons in NSW.
As you know there are alot of PNG greens here (on license) and i want to know are you guys doing anything with them.
I have been hearing for years that NPWS is going to DNA test all greens and PNG specimans will be taken.
I been tossing up weather to buy some for the last 2yrs and i would like to know if i do buy some are you guys going to come and test them and take them if they turn out to be PNG, no breeder in Australia will admit to having PNG greens for obvious reasons.
The only safe line to buy from is in SA and i would rather not freight them, given the money involed, anoher reason why i'd like to know what NPWS is doing.

Any answers would be very much appreciated.

As you know, Green Pythons are not a species that occurs naturally in NSW and therefore could not be subject to illegal take in this State. Consequently, private possession of the species is not a high priority for costly investigation unless there is a specific request from Queensland or the Commonwealth governments.

All I can tell you now is that there are no current proposals to conduct a DNA program to detect illegally imported GTPs in this State or to separate Australian from exotic animals if this is possible.

If there was such a program I wouldn't be surprised if Qld would want all Aussie snakes returned to that State because they contend that GTPs were never legally taken from the wild for dispersal to private collectors. The Commonwealth would possibly seek euthanasia of all exotic GTPs.

Cheers,

Jeff

i was told this afternoon by a ranger that gtp's were not a priority as a result of the amnesty because of the politics innvolved at this stage in qld.the dept knows where they all are obviously.no decision has been made at this point.
