Question on data loggers

Does anyone use them? What do they think of them? Worthwhile or a waste of money? Any information would be very much appreciated. Thanks

speaking of data loggers, i sell a data logging systems which are a sheet of data buttons setup with "events"

for example, you might have 10 rows of 5 buttons

in one row of 5, you may have these events

1.jungle female 001 fed
2.jungle female 001 shed
3.jungle female 001 defecated
4.jungle female 001 bit me the bitch
5.jungle female 001 mated with jungle male 001

or in another row of 5

1.jungle female 001 mating sighted
2.bredli female 001 mating sighted
3.olvie female 001 mating sighted
4.BHP female 001 mating sighted
5.BHP female 002 mating sighted

etc etc - the events are set by te user and the posibilities are endless.

when these events occur, you place your portable wand againts the corrisponding button and the data is uploaded to the wand.

as needed log your wand into download cable or dock for your pc/laptop and download the data to the software.

the software displays the time/date and event that occured.

you can have a whole folder of buttons (they mount in special plastic sleaves.)

1000s of events if you wish.

you can even get the software to tell you when a prearranged event hasn't occured. for example, you could prearrange to have jungle female 001 fed twice a fortnight, if this is not done, the software will warn you that an event was unfinished. etc etc etc

this product has endless capabilties.

only downside is the price.

basic package is $2000 including the wand, download cable (for tranfering wand data to pc), 10 buttons, software and protective wand pouch.

extra buttons are inexpensive. the wand and software is the big outlay.

do not pm me about this if your interested email only.

this product isn't for anyone, but for labs and large keepers, it could be priceless.

i thought a data logger was like an egg with a recording thermometer inside. you put it in the cage and it will record the temperature over say 1 week . then you plug it in to the computer and it will graph out what the temperature has been over the last week at say 15 minute intervals. That would save sitting and watching the thermometer every 15 minutes for a week. Maybe the term dataloger os wrong. i figured they were about $150 including some sort of software biult into the egg t6o tell the computer what to graph.Am i right??

I have a data logger like the one that is currently out of stock at the Herp Shop.

It is in almost continuous use and I wonder how I ever coped without it for doing things like setting up incubators and enclosures.

You can set to take samples at regular intervals for up to 18 months. The more often it takes samples the less time it can sample for. I generally leave it set to sample at 5 minute intervals. When you download the data it puts it into a text file (See below) which can be pulled into your favourite spread sheet program (eg Excel) or displayed in their graphing tool.

The screen shot I have attached to this post is from my coastal enclosure. For about a week I had the logger up the hot end under a basking light and then it got moved to the cooler end for a little over a week. You can easily see the day time fluctuatons in temperature as peaks on the graph. In this instance I was a little surprised to see as much fluctuation at the cool end as I did but I am happy with the setup of the enclosre.

The real bonus for me is the accuracy of the device. I compared it to every thermometer I own and it correlated well with the one I trust as most accurate.

A section of the data from which generated the screen shot:

i dont know anything about computers . If you plug the data logger into the usb port does it work instantly or do you need software? Maybe software is biult in to the data logger. i assume you need say Microsoft office only and the data logger. Is that right Herp Trader??

Mine worked well from day one. Every now and then Windoze cannot find the logger but the old micro$oft reboot solution has always fixed it. Windoze XP is not a beast I am overly happy with.

I found the the moisture seals were not all that great but zip lock bags help a lot.

The software comes with the one I bought. Not overly clever - nice and simple the way I like it. You need the software to talk to the device and download the data.

Mate they are a Godsend! Fantastic for recording temps accurately and timed too. Data read out by list or graph and so Damned easy to use. I coulda kissed the Herp Shops, (not the owners), butt when they started stocking them! Best thing since sliced bread if you ask me

If you use a thermostat and a heat source in your cool end and hot end, set at the temperature you want,
is there really any need for a data logger like this apart from nice to know. It sounds like something you could
just keep an eye on whenever you passed by the enclosure. It'd be handy for people who hold more than
a hand full of temp reliant reptiles (ie not outdoors)
