Rack set up- thermostat probe

Hi all,

I've just finshed building a new rack setup and was wondering how others have set the thermostat up. I will be using one thermostat to control all 6 tubs, but figured putting the probe into one tub will be a pain when i have to remove the tub.

Has anyone tried putting the probe into the groove with the heat cord and then fine tune the tub temperatures from there?

Any suggestions would be great.

From what I have seen most people set up a "dummy Tub" same as it all the others but put no animal in it, that way it is always there and always constant, even while cleaning the others. Just what I have seen.

Put another groove about 10 to15 mm away from the cord groove and place the
probe in that one, our hatchie racks are set up that way and it works well

IMO the best thing to do is use low wattage cord(eg. 4m 15w) so you dont need a thermostat. As far as i know there is no advantage in using a higher wattage cord and restricting it to a similar output to what you get from a low wattage cord. Are there any advantages to using a high wattage cord with a thermostat vs using low wattage cords without them?

Cris, i have ordered a 15w cord from herpshop. i still will be using a thermostat for peace of mind. i currently have a 7.5W heat mat sitting under 1/3 of a 10l tub which has recorded over 40C on the hot end on top of the substrate, with a dimming stat it still spikes up to 35-36 every now and then. Never used heat cord before, but i sure as hell won't be using heat mats again.

Beeman i have allredy made a groove for the probe hoping it was the way to go.

Ive used thermostat probes under the tub directly on the heat cord, with success. Moniter the tub with a thermometer gun and adjust thermstat to tub temp regardless of thermostat reading.
