Below freezing, the highs are a bit harder as it can depend on whether they are actually exposed to direct sun. They handle over 30's, give them plenty of water.
That should read below freezing is fine.

Dont know what the optimal temps for breeding are though. Any one with temps? gets to low single figures out here in Bonogin at night. I was thinking of warming mine up for this chilly winter on the Goldcoast. Some females popped a couple of weeks ago but nothing since. . Was thinking about heat cord under the plastic tubs. would have to use tiles i guess in case of fire but. Ideas?

When i bred mice they were in the shed which is basically the same temp as outside, in summer they struggled sometimes but in winter they are fine.

I found mine bred really well in winter in Tamworth. We're talking down to the minuses most nights, as low as -12C and rarely over the low teens during the day. They were in an insulated shed though, so it used to hang around 10-15C in there.

I remember reading some study that said 20 deg C was optimal (could be wrong though my memory is shot). Below that they start to eat more food and hence cost more to breed.

This time of year I run a heat cord under the tubs. They seem to prefer the hot spot created by the heat cord.

well i might just see how they go and maybe change later on if they stop popping. codered do you run heatcord directly under the tubs or use a tile for fire insulation, just in case?

I actually use a piece of PVC pipe (about 5 cm long) cut in half to protect the heat cord from being damaged by the tubs. I'll get a pic later, taht'll explain what I am on about.

Do any of you guys down south notice the breeding dropping off now the nights are cold ? We are getting cold nights down into single figures but I have rats galore. Does it really get cold enough in Sydney to need extra nightime heat ?

I think I had more success with breeding when it was cold, they had to warm themselves up somehow
(I'm talking mice not rats but they should be similar)

Yes I find the same thing, in the really hot summer months breeding drops off but throughout winter they go ballistic.

There is not cold enough in Australiato be concern but I had some loses in heat wave this year. They started dying at 38C. Older and pregnant females died first and juvies rats survived at 43C
