i mean we all breed them for food not pets
this all has to be take in consideration when u want to house and breed hundreds of them to keep collections fed
as long as u provide them with the essentials u arent doing anything wrong, if there is anything that can be done wrong to a rat or mouse

Andrew | Yeah me to Andrew, that's really compact and neat, looks good!
How do you actually organise your breeding regime/cycle with this set-up as well?
Am I trying to complicate this whole concept or what?
I usually do with most things, lol

top two are the breeding tubs , 1 male to 5 females , next four tubs are for mums and bubs and the bottom 2 are what i feed my snakes from ,, water needs to be done every day ( unless you have auto water system ) but food lasts a week or more before needing topup,,,

I think Australis has the right idea. Do you really think female rats are given a 4 week break outside the confines of a rat breeding tub? I think not. They would be lucky to last a week before falling pregnant again. Rats have adpated to do two things. Live a short and fulfilling life, and make babies, lots and lots of babies. I think however, if we want to talk humane care that hides should always be provided to any animal whether it be for feeder animals or pets. Animals require three things to survive a happy life. Food, water and shelter.

Rats are very intelligent creatures and should have mental and psychical stimulation. If people didnt have the privelege of keeping and breeding rodents then bye bye to everyones reptile collections, I think they deserve a little more respect than majority of people give them.
I would laugh at the day if there is a crackdown on battery farming rodents, there goes most peoples line of food and suppliers until they up their standards

God forbid people having to wait a few weeks for another litter, it would be unbearable

[/rant] | So how many rats do you run in you "humane" system? And do you have food in bowls in the containers with them, How many off spring does it supply monthly?

[/rant] | Stop it Vixenbabe, your tugging on my sensitive side...I agree with both sides and now i'm more confused than ever...
I think I like the more conservative approach to breeding, ie give the female a bit of respect (or a rest in this case)...Although the other side of the debate makes perfect sense as well, I personally don't think I can do it like that!
Thanks everyone and Ben, who started the thread, I have learn't heaps...
Cheers guys,
Scott.
Sorry boys, showing my sensative side here, have to go with the girls on this one, but I can live with that! | | | |
