Alot would say rats, but i would go the mice as they would have better developed bones which are beneficial for your snake.

If it has been well fed it should be able to eat fuzzy rats or weaner rats. They can easily eat pink rats when they are 2 months old. My yearlings are about 2 foot and eat weaner rats. One way to work out a fair meal size is by weighing the snake and feeding it a meal that is about 20% of its weight.

It doesnt really make much differance using rats or mice, i would use whatever is cheaper for the same amount of food.

A well aged mouse is better for it than young rats as the older mice have more calcium and muscle content.

I personally think the fairly small difference in calcium levels is not significant, i have never heard of anyone having any trouble from feeding young rats.
This page has all the details although it only has info for brown rats not the normal black rat that is commonly used, I suspect they would be very similar.

why not mix it up.... buy the appropriate size mice, then buy the appropriate size rats, then mice etc etc

Why can't you? What is holding you back from doing so?

Ah. A Musophobic Mum or is it she is worried about the smell?

Rats smell far less than mice do.

Do you have a shed that perhaps she'll allow you to do it in?

Perhaps explain the cost savings involved.

I understand completely mate, as soon as I idea'd the snake I tried for the 'rat breeding in the garage' angle...she wouldn't have a bar of it Regardless of how I justify it she won't budge on the concept...

I have a quick question that is related... my spotty is 2 months old, and i think that the pinky rats he's eating are too small as one does not seem to fill him up and he eats it quite quickly. Would you suggest going onto weaner mice? or fuzzy mice? or is there another more suitable size mouse for a 2 month old spotty? Thought it was relevant to this question and might be the same answer for both of us!
