reptile shop in Melb. no good

I visited a reptile shop in Melbourne recently and I was not impressed with the look and care of animals that were on display in the shop.
For starters at entry there was some hard rock tape playing, personally I would think that that is not a real good enviroment. Then there was "rubbish" laying around everywhere eg backings bits and pieces of pumps, the counter looked messy products not very well displayed
A adult lacemonitor kept in a 8 by 2 2 foot tank, skins in display tanks, poos in display tanks, Lizards kept in small enclosures, damaged lizards on display eg tail chopped toes missing. Snake poos in water bowls.
All in all not a very professional shop, I was highly disappointed because I heard that this shop was very good. All I hope is that these sort of scenes are not going to develop in Queensland.

6-8 foot snakes kept in 3 foot fish tanks..............and it kept on going
turtle tanks green and full of *****...........

This is exactly why i'm dead against reptiles in regular pet shops.Whoever they are should be reported to the approriate authorities.Hearing this sort of thing quite often now really pi$$es me off

We have dealt with two really totally into Reptile shops in Adelaide who only sell Reptiles. I will name them:- Scales and Tails(Deb and Gavin) on Prospect Road, Prospect. and also Gully Reptile Centa at Modbury(Nigel is the guy we dealt with). Haven't dealt with Ultimate Reptiles as yet. Both Scales and Tails and the Gully Reptile Centa seemed totally clean and up with things to us. Cheers Cheryl

They're specialised reptile shops run by experienced people.I'm all for reptiles only shops but now that regular et shops have been given the go ahead to sell reptiles we will be hearing more stories like this one.

I would think it my civil duty to report these guys or any shop if i had come across a similar situation......

Well Browns, we haven't even got a snake yet(but looking into maybe a Murray Darling???) but you can really tell when people know what they are doing, especially like Scales and Tails in Prospect SA.

I'd like to get a Snake organised for Dave for his birthday in August. Got to get an enclosure organised as yet. Not quite sure how to go about this as yet? Should it be made of wood or glass, or both? Drift wood from the sea(no mites) for climbing on? Want a young Murray Darling Python? How Much? Can I pay one off before August, somewhere in Adelaide. Should I ask Gavin from Scales and Tails? He breeds a lot of snakes/reptiles. Its going to be a surprise for Dave. So don't tell him hey? Helllllllllllllp???????????????????????

I am with BROWNS. Putting reptiles in regular pet shops is stupid. Firstly it is likely that they will be kept in a second rate enviroment and seconds i think that putting them in pet shops will increase impulse buying. Not being able to sell them in pet shops means that people who really want a reptile have to do proper research etc etc.

Scales and Tails have a good reputation. They should be able to help you out with everything.

Just a suggestion, get some books to read at least and ask as many questions to any herper friends as you can.

Get "care of Australian reptiles in Captivity" by John Weigel before you get a snake.
Oh and read it too
