Hard rock playing in the store? So what?
Snakes are deaf. How much vibration would they really feel through the glass of the enclosure?
I have had band practise in my house. It didn't even bother my beardies (which can hear).
Maybe Insectbloke is justified in bagging this reptile shop but it seems to happen a lot on these forums.

This was Melbourne Reptile Warehouse eh?
I seriously found it one of the best pet shops in Melbourne, very good service too.
I did think the stacking of products behind the counter was a bit average...the Lace Monitor enclosure was a little bit too small, but it looked healthy and the guys were a bit old school rock looking, apart from that everything was wicked. Very helpful guys.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm............without mentioning any names people seem to put a name tag to this reptile shop, which to me indicates that I must have been on the right track. To me when you are serving the public you want to show people the best way to care for your animals and keeping a Lace monitor in a 8 foot tank is not right. I think one of the first important things of keeping reptiles is proper Hygiene and this was not displayed in the shop. To the people who think this shop is great...good luck in future reptile breeding/keeping, maybe I'm not right and we should all buy from these sort of shops.
About the music...There is nothing wrong with hard rock but I think there is a time and place for it. With this music in your shop you might only attract a certain group of people. While the goal should be to educate everyone about herpetology.
It is good to hear that there is good reptile shops around and in my next visit to SA I will visit these shops.

well, the last few times i was there, i thought it was great! All the other people i have spoken to about it (President of the VHS for one) also said it was the best 'pet shop' to buy reptiles from.

You're on the wrong track mate, everyone else, myself included, finds it one of if not the best petshops in Melbourne. The reason people know what shop you're talking about is because the Lace Monitor enclosure is very obvious and not many pet shops stock Lace Monitors at all.

I am not going to slag of anyone as I have never had the good fortune to visit any reptile shops that stock reptiles as I live in Sydney but it is my opinion that if you are going to sell large reptiles then hard as it maybe they should be displayed in a similar sort of setup that is should be kept in that way they can sell the whole package and if they don't they will more than likely get in more large stock that could go in their. A large monitor needs room it IS cruel to deny it any room to move, whereas large snakes even though inactive still a large cage would be good to be able to educate new comers as by showing them how these animals should be kept instead of the newbies going oh well they kept it like that at the shop.Insectevor you may have simply gone there the day before cleaning,it is not an easy task to keep hundreds of animals.

Obviously this is one of these subjects that bring a lot of diffrent opinions on the web page. This will be my last submission to this subject. But I have to summarize that; keeping hundreds of animals is not easy, but if you can't handle it don't have hundreds.
people are free to run the way they like to run their shop, all I was commenting on is that the animals were not kept conform to standards I like to see the animals being kept. To the people that visit these shops all I can say is; stay with the shop you're happy with but it would not be my personal choice.

Happy herping and until the next discussion...........
