Reptilemania DVD - review - available from the Herp Shop

We have just finished watching the Reptilemania DVD that the Herp Shop has just started selling. I was sceptical knowing that it is an US based production but the commentary is by Adrian Hemens – an Aussie. Adrian has obviously played the major role in the production of this video.

It starts off with a bit of the history of corn snakes and how they helped kick start the herp hobby in the US and led to the designer morphs of many species that are currently available.

Judy (trader), I and our daughter watched the DVD with interest. Our collective jaws dropped when they started showing the immense (HUGE) breeding facilities of some of the larger breeders. I have seen photos of the Barkers set up and thought that massive but some of these setups were amazing in comparison!

Everybody who is in the who’s who of reptile breeding seems to get interviewed and demonstrates their breeding tips.

There is a segment with Greg Maxwell showing off his chondros which I found of interest particularly seeing on DVD some of the setups he describes in his book. (The Complete Chondro.) Other names I recognised included Bob Clark, Mark O’Shae, Bob Applegate and Jim Flaherty.

It is just a real eye opener and a must have. (and at $20 a pop reasonably priced also!)

The production quality is excellent and if you have the full on “Home Theatre system” you won’t be disappointed. (Alas we don’t but my computer does a reasonable job albeit with cheap speakers etc.)

This is intended as a review so I have put it in the general section but if the mods want to move it to the “for sale” I suppose that is ok.

Hi Stevo, how is the family?

I would love to bring you a copy, unfortunately the HerpShop (where the DVD's are) and the HerpTrader are on opposite sides of the city. Brian will not be at the meeting, but give him a ring and he can post one out to you!

You will really enjoy the DVD, I found it amazing!

Cheers, Judy

It is actually a while since I have seen these and it was not from the DVD's but on television. Both these DVD's were shown... I think on Channel 7 a year or so back. I was particularly impressed with the Taipan one where they sought to explain the reasons for differences between the two species particularly in relation to their venom toxicity.

I think Rob Bredl's (Barefoot Bushman) style of presentation is so far in front of the in your face, American style, wildlife documentary presenters it is not funny. At the end of Bredl's presentation I always feel as if I have learned something even if I have seen the show a number of times before. You are left with sense that you have been presented with a balanced representation of the animal. You are not left wondering how much of the information has been hyped up for effect (and to assist the marketing to a mostly US audience).

Rob Bredl is also an excellent Aussie herp!

If you want another opinion give Brian at the Herp Shop a call. He has watched both video's a number of times recently and can provide a fresher perspective.
