Reptiles in petshops in QLD.

Please forgive me if I missed all the threads regarding this, but I wasn't aware that this was about to happen:

REPTILES: From 1/03/04 reptiles will be available in Pet Shops Join Qld Reptile Amphibian Club inc. & meet the breeders of reptiles to be sure you receive the correct info. on purchasing your 1st reptile. Licence required. Phone: 3200 0266

Taken from the Trading post.QLD.

Does anyone know of anyone with a petshop planning to keep Reptiles in QLD, or maybe a specialist Reptile shop, I know I am in NSW, but I do travel to QLD now and then and it would be good to visit one.

So, how long do you think it will be before NSW does the same?, or is it a case of 'how long is a peice of robe?'

Cheers
Neil

I was in a pet store yesterday and they are setting up for it, there are still some finalizing points at this stage, they were looking to have stock within a few weeks.
The guys in the reptile area were ok but the front counter service was so sloppy that I left my goods on the counter and walked out. They try to make it a complete shop but they lack the service, I intend to purchase from one of the companies that support this site from now on.
I cant see any qld breeders supplying the pet shops here, all the animals will come from interstate. There is a bizarre clause that says if you supply them, then you can only keep that species, as they are only allowed to keep the childreni group, who would sell the rest of their collection just to breed them and supply pet shops at $50 per hatchy! Correct me if Im wrong, this is how I believe it to be.

I believe the licence is $10,000 so that should scare of Joe Animal Money Maker from getting into it. They won't make money off the animals, they'll only make money on package deals (Enclosure, accesories, animal and food).

Sounds good if worked the right way. If some breeders ( we all are at some point ) get together and co-operate there could be a really great store getting exposure ( lets face it no one wants people window shopping in their house ) doing package deals as they would get the stuff wholesale, sales people who actually know what they are talking about, all the expenses of breeding etc then become tax deductible, set up a web site. Just my view but there is now a hole to be filled so someone has to fill it. Why let Tom's dogs and cats do it???

We have only got one dedicated reptile shop here ( will be on net soon www.rockyreptiles.com.au ) and a few home ones. The rest are pet shops cashin in on a market. From what i can gather the specialist shops should get a name good or bad in a short time due to everyone in the scene going in for a bit of an ezmay. Will be a shame if the pet shops get no stock cause no one will sell to them eh!!

My gossip machine reckons that NSW has drafted legislation for the pet industry and could be on line by the end of the year. Im sure we'll hear more soon.

ps You can always take a weekender to Canberra.

Thanks for your input guys.

Things are surely changing, I just hope the local authorities keep a close eye on the petshops that are selling them.

Either that or we will send Zoe down there to sort them out! You are for that Zoe? LOL!

Only 3 pythons can be sold, spotteds, childrens and stimpsons.
Lizards are only beardies and blueys.
Animal wise, it wouldnt be much of a speciality store.

doesn't need to be a specialty store, the store could focus on beginers. to the average person thats a lot of reps and don't forget the mechandice thats where you would bring in the $$$ plus there are also many sevises you could provid with minamle over head its a very big opertunaty any way you look at it if done correctly.

Doesnt have to be huge either. One wall floor to ceiling full of herps should cover the stock. Your right luke as it would definately be able to cater for beginners which is the biggest turnover market. Ad are you saying only maculosus, childreni and stimsoni ( both orientalis and stimsoni ), there are 6 species of blueys and 6 of beardeds. Thats 15 species potentially in one shop. No doubt more species would be added in the future also. Hmmmmmm.......... Is it nice in QLD??
