Rescued a Turt!!!!

Guess what, We were going to pick up micks dirt bike and there was a turtle sitting in the middle of the road. I think it might be a penny turtle!!!! :-P he he he...No, he is a Ch. longicollis I have cleaned off all the leach eggs and we are going to go back to where we found it to release it in the nearby dam tomorrow!!! The pheremones that this species releases is not nice, I was dumb enough to go back for a second sniff!!! One lucky turtle I say, considering the size of the trucks along this road!!! He measures 26cm in carapace length!!!

Yeah, thats the best word I could think of... orange, stinky stuff may have been better!!! I take it that the big scary trucks were the predators for this fella!!!

Well, it is one of the identifying characteristics of longneck turtles and it is rarely seen in captive specimens... well, the smell of it almost made me vomit so it is pretty stinky. I just released it... spoke to a turt guru I know and he said as long as it is released within 20kms (because of the gene pool) it will be fine. My nanna lives at an old farts home which is built around 2 massive dams. I have seen turtles there and it is peaceful and away from the big roads (all is good as long as the grannies dont run him down with their scooters). I didnt want to run the risk of releasing him in the dam near where we found him for a few reasons. It is on a main road on a chicken farming property (the crap they pump into the chickens most prpbably pumps into the dam aswell). They are also draining the dam which is why he probably went walkabout. The old farts home will never be built out in the forseeable future where as the chicken farm will be developed in the coming years.

He will be happy there... it was a great feeling watching him swim away into the water!!! I happy now!!!
