A snake wouldn't have the strike power to break glass that thick.
I have never used anything but standard 4mm glass never a problem, i can't understand while some people on this list use 6mm safety glass, except those who have small children. |

The biggest one killed and measured was quoted by Eric Worrell. I believe it was around 1945 at Greenhill, Cairns. Worrell reported it to be 28ft. Graeme Gow once told me he had seen the skin of this snake and that it was as long as quoted.
Rob Bredl(the barefoot bushman) once told me the biggest he had measured was a 23ft monster that had been killed by a farmers tractor at Cardwell.
My 21 footer was from the Johnson River Gorge, Innisvail in 1970.
The largest I have seen in the last 20 years was at the Queensland Reptile Park run by the Irwins(crikey). I never measured it but Bob Irwin believed it was between 18 and 21 feet long. They used to feed it young goats. |

and bloody shirts during herp talks.
What a man. lol.
He didn't kill the Scrubby did he? I thought it was found dead at the side ot the road?
I read about him and the Scrubs, and one site says that he rediscovered the large scrubs in one area three seperate times decades apart.
And (crikey) Bob Irwin is a good man too.
Worrell was the first Herpetologist I ever met. I was 8 years old and will always remember.
I'm grateful for these pioneers, and the wealth of information they supplied. and now >>hands sceptre to young ones<< It's near time for you guys to take over and learn and spread joy. never forget their passion - try to duplicate it.

If a striking snake hit the glass in such a manner that the force was delivered over a very small area, it would break but it would also stop the snake so that it's head did not go through the glass and sustain any cuts.

We went to a 'Reptile Handling Course' after my son got his Beardies when he was 7. The invitation was extended to all people who came in contact with reptiles (which is almost everybody) and particularly for FAWNA and WIRES workers.
The Animal Welfare workers all came bearing small blanket pouches with a few different mammal babies. Bats, Possums, Wallabies a koala. They are all passionate about what they save. One lady had some obscure little feathertail glider.
No, don't think snake food. lol
The speaker was Jim Stoppford. He spoke definitively on how to care for and handle injured reptiles. He had brought along some beautiful snakes, as had some of the other keepers. He was enteraining and knowledgable and the meeting went on without a hitch.
- - - - -
He then showed us a pride large Scrub (If I remember right, I may be wrong on species) in a small portable cage, as he held it up after being questioned about live feeding. (Remember this was years ago and discussing WC rescued.)
He said 'Oh, If I'm stuck for food for him I throw in a small Possum or Wallaby'
Shock horror!
The place went silent. Except for us.. The Herpers looked at each other and stifled laughter, as we saw the humour, alas not many others did.
The incident was soon passed over, and the food chain was explained.
I know it was an excellent day of learning and I know we have Notes on everything he said. But the looks on the faces of those poor Mammal people will stay etched on my mind forever.
