Sex these ackies!

These guys are about 6 months old... just about the age when one should be able to start sexing them.

There are four of them, all from the same clutch. They have been photographed from largest to smallest.

They are labled A1 to A4 ;-) I will put the photos in 4 separate posts.

So here is the chance for you goanna sexeres to strut your stuff.

Here is A1 the bigest, we separated him from the others because he had grown so much bigger than his cage mate.

Maybe they are a bit young.

The theory was get 4 and on the balance of probabilities we should get at least one pair.

They are the cutest little things though... so active and so entertaining.

The way i have always sexed them (with pretty good accuracy) is to run my thumb up and down over the spur clusters, males spurs will be sharper and will catch on your skin, females will feel softer and less sharp, it always helps if you have a known male and female to get the idea with.
Bob Withey showed me that technique with ackies years ago and i have found it to be the best way by far.

The fail safe way to tell females is when they lay eggs

X-raying will always be the best way to sexed them but it comes at a price.

male, male,male/ female, female...
When you look down on the tail from above....compare to see how far the spur's stick out if viewed from above....the females will be almost be tucked in (small wont stick out as much) compared to the males which will noticeably stick out....the males will be sharper and more prominent compared to the girls....
Then look at head sizes after you have compared the spurs and made your guess....generally speaking the females should appear slightly slender and in appearance....as the male tends to be a lot bulkier with thicker neck size over all. All been said and done; watch and observe their behaviour when together.....

I thought the same thing when I brought 3 last year, of course I was told they were 2 females & 1 Male.
I then had them X-rayed to find I had 3 females. Only certain way, except for what dugadugabowbow said & they lay eggs
I would "guess" male, male, female, female.
Good luck with them
Cheers

I notices A2 attempting to mount either A3 or A4. (A1 is housed separately)

I am guessing A2 is a boy ;-)
