Sexing a bearded dragon...

Hi guys,

For a while now i've wondered whether my beardy is a male or female (and i couldn't find any information in the other sections of the forums) so i just wanted to know how i go about sexing a bearded dragon, as i would like to find him/her a mate.

Check for hemipenal bulges mate near the vent... Males have two pronounced bulges whereas females have a single, smaller, central bulge. Males also often have pores present on the underside of their back limbs.

Cheers,

Best get someone who knows what they are doing to show you. Adult males have clearly visible hemipenal bulges that can be seen by lifting the tail, they are two bulges on the tail side of the cloaca (vent), males also have a wider cloacal opening although you need educated eyes to know what you are looking at. Males also have larger, wider heads that are less rounder than the females and lastly males beards get alot darker than the females and they darken up all the way down to their chest area when alert.

Is it only males that bob their heads? Because I have what I thought were two females, but now one is bobbing its head fairly often.

heres a link with photos on what to look for. pretty easy once youve seen a few. If in doubt go down the petshop and look at some other beardies and try to tell.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm at present trying to roughly gauge how old my beardie is (it was given to me as a gift) and from what i can tell (given the advice of the article), is that:

a) it is a female
b) it is two young to sex, as it has no really prominant bulge at the moment. So i might delay finding it a mate until i am 100% certain.

would anyone be able to roughly gauge whther it is either a juvenile or fully grown if i post pics??
