Sexing of juvies

Hi all
just want to get some ideas on the most successful ways of sexing pythons and the pros and cons with each. At what age do spurs become obvious? Have heard that probing is the most accurate but shouldn't be done until a certain age. is this true? I've also heard that popping is dangerous. share your tips and techniques
happy herping

Probing is the best and most fail safe way. If dont by an experienced it can be done not long after they have left the egg. Don't try it if you have no idea what you are doing, you may harm the snake.

Hemipine bulges are everdent in most pythons and can be sexed accordingly with 80-90 percent accuarucy, Pilbara can use a simular technique with almost 100 percent rigth.
Probing is the fail safe,(as a rule, there are exceptions.)way and juviniles can be probed after first shed from egg, normaly 10- 15 days. Without any ill effects if done propaly. Except of course condros.

With birds you can get a bird sex tested via its DNA. Is DNA testing available for herps? It would be better than sticking a peice of cold metal up you pets Russel Coight

chondros have an intensly prehensile tail compared to most pythons and it can be damaged very easily, so much so that it is not advisable to even try and remove one from its perch while the animal is under 1 year. Once they reach 2-3 they seem to be safe and very strong. I dont prob chondros untill they are 1 year of age.

isn't ture with most snakes that the female has a more narrow head an a flater tail on the underside, not like the male who has a more boofier head with a more rounder underside of his tail an his spurs stand out more then the female.

R1MAN...Can I ask you who you got them off...?? I have two.. 7 month olds Coastals.. And the fella Who I got them off ( Kroy ) said I could take them back to him when they are about 2 foot long to get them sexed. Just that way they are not so fragile.. I will be taking them to him soon...Not too far off at all... If they arent 2 foot already..

RE: Sexing of juvies

I was told the python Maccie that i purchased was a female. After looking very closly at her the other day i noticed two greenish bits on her/his underside. just wanting to know if they are the organs of a male
