Keeping Shinglebacks in coastal environments on the eastern seaboard will require some attention to enclosure humidity, if you can control that (and temp) there should be little problems with RI |

Gender: | | | | I have kept them on the coast for the last 5 odd years, their health varies abit, I have had some trouble with scale rot with the male, soon after I got them. It has taken him a couple of years to get over it fully, though this season he has been biting at his girl so he must be feeling ok. You do need to pay some special attention to cage design, basically keep them under lots of heat in a cold room, this will burn off humidity, if the room temp gets over 30 deg, and the heating is turned off, you may run into some problems. Shingles have a slow metabolism, most of the problems are slow to show and slow to heal.

The truth is, very few people on the coast regularly breed them, due mainly to the fact that they don't live the really heathy lives they need to to breed. There are some breeders over Western Sydney, though Shingles only have 1 -4 babies a year. Most are collected illegally.
