Skin constriction in monitors

Hey all,
I was just after some confirmation about the cause of unshed skin constricting around the toes and tail of monitor lizards. I fairly sure it is due to being kept at low temperatures, although I'm not 100%. I keep my Gilleni with a 65+ degree basking spot, and have'nt had any problems. Is there any other possible causes of this problem?

Hi Neph,
always believed it to be a substrate thing, they need the dirt/sand for digging which removes it from these areas.
If you substrate on paper it may be the issue.
cheers

A walk on damp grass solves the problem for blueys.
Humidity and substrate seem to be the major two problems.

RE: Skin constriction in monitors

I think you're right when you say the most important thing is a high temperature basking spot. 65+ sounds perfect. I've never had any skin constriction problems with my monitors, so can't really say from personal experience what causes it. You see heaps of monitors (and dragons and skinks) in peoples' collections with missing digits and tails, I'm not sure, but my guess is that the typical causes are different between the lizard families.

By the way, did you buy your gilleni from a guy in Melbourne?

Funny you should meantion that Sdaji, I did purchase some gilleni from a bloke in Melbourne. We bought them at a bargain price as well!
How are your stone geckos going? My carpets are getting big.
Also, at what size will gilleni breed? The gilleni i bought are currently about 12cm SVL (maybe a bit smaller). They'd be about 26-28cm long (Tail length).
I thought i'd give them another year on their own. they can have another year of growth.

Yeah, they're going very nicely, I might post a pic of my favourite one, she's really cute! Great to hear your carpets are growing well, those ones were very good feeders!

The gilleni could probably breed this season, but another year of growth certainly won't hurt them and you may end up with bigger and more clutches next year, all the same, don't feel too squeamish about having a go this season, I've bred them at less than 12 months of age.
