Gday all. I'm just after a new type of substrate, I'm using one of the sandy ones at the moment, but i wat something a bit easier to clean (and I refuse to use newspaper). I'm converting some old furniture so I want something that looks pretty good.
Some people have mentioned sythetic grass to me, has anyone has any experience with this?

Hey Chairs,
Try marine carpet - looks great and comes in a variety of colours, one of which is sure to match the design you have in mind. It's made for boats so it is easily washed. Buy twice as much as much as you need and cut it into easy to manage pieces (2 is enough for the standard enclosure). This way you can swap the dirty section for a clean one and you may not have to dismantle your enclosure's entire interior every time you need to remove a piece.
I don't keep dragons myself, but I have heard a rumour they can get their claws caught in artificial grass. Totally unconfirmed though ...
Cheers,
Nic

I also have been using Marine Carpet for a while. I find it is much better than Artificial Grass, as the grass tends to lose little bits regularly, and when you cut it the base part has long threads that work loose over time. But apart from that it's not too bad. Both can be hosed down and disinfected really easily, but the grass tends to suffer much more form wear and tear.
Currently I am trialling Aspen bedding with my lizards, which is a type of woodshaving. I have the Marine Carpet down over the heatmats/heat cable, then put the Aspen shavings on top. It's working well with the lizards, absorbing the moisture and keeping the smells down. Also gives the Bluetongues something to bury themselves in. Haven't tried it out on snakes yet, but John Weigel said it was the ants pants for pythons, and that everyone in the States is using it. The only problem is if you get mites, it's a great haven for them.

Hix | Hi Hix, where do you get Aspen from? I know it's widely used in the States but I've not found it here. What's the price and how big are the bags?
And with the marine carpet, being waterproof does it absorb their pee or does it pool on top? I too use astro turf and while it does last a while, you're right it does over time fray and bits come off it. I have a young shingleback that was eating it so he is back on newspaper but I'd prefer something else.
My other lizards are on half astro turf, half shredded paper (that I take from work)
thanks
Lisa

We're using Lizard Litter for our Shingles...other than being a bit sticky if their food is wet, we've had no problems with it. Not noticed any smells, and we just spot clean if we see a mess, then once a week, we replace at least a third of the litter.
We were thinking of getting some bush flooring in their enclosure to give them some natural elements, but the jury is still out on that.

News paper. Cheap, easy to clean. Go to your local news paper shop and ask them if you can have the newspapers in thier recycling bins.

Lisa, you can get Aspen bedding from Pet Barn. Its a rip off at $39 for a 20 litre bag (thats compressed). It expands to about 50 litres which I reckon is enough to do a 4'x2' cage twice over. Once Ive finished trialing my first bag I will search for a cheaper source.
