HELP!!! Bob the Builder who is in my photo album is now over 2 foot long and yesterday I bought a few 3 day old chooks which he simply had to have one of even though he ate 2 small rats 2 days before. I got him out tonight and his lower jaw is swollen!! The chook wasn't really that big for him,but the bum of the chook took him 20 minutes to swollow, now if any of my other snakes can't eat a prey item cause it is too big they simply regurgitate it,Bob didn't and now his lower jaw is swollen. It is firm like when you sprain your ankle and it swell up, he doesn't seem to pull away when you touch it as we would. So there Slatey I have stuffed up more than you with food items. This has never happened before and if he aint right I WILL TAKE HIM TO THE VET, but I was wondering if any of you had this happen to you? ( Please don'y pick on me Simon) chuckle, chuckle.

Do you think I fed him to large a prey item? They were from the chook people you suggested Slatey so that should give Slateman an idea of how big they are. They are only little bantam chooks so it's not like they are big babies.

I don't see how that could happen by feeding him too large a prey item though. It's strange. I've never even heard of a snake with a swollen jaw.

Yeah it's just like his skin was stretched too much but it is firm like there is fluid under the skin, not soft as if it was just stretched. I have never had any probs like this before either.

Adam I don't think that food item was to big, as he eated it in 20 minutes. He could bump to something by missing prey which he was striking at.
If the food is to big, they take hours to swalowed. My girl olive I feed the large rabbit took 2 hours to get it in.
I do not think that you will have to much problem if that is just broosed by missed strike.
You must tell your Bob not to headbut.

Yeah sweet. All panic has subsided now when I woke up this arvo the swelling had gone right down!! Thank god. I was a bit worried there.

Glad the problem is resolved.
It reminds me that I had a swelling scare too once, but I think it was shed realated, not food related. My Mac had what looked like a 'puffy' upper jaw. I checked her mouth, and although there weren't the usual signs I suspected maybe mouth rot. I took photos, raised the cage temps, applied antiseptic and made the first available vet appointment I could. Then in the interim I emailed photos to the vet, and breeder and held my breath. Turns out there was no mouth rot and the puffiness or swelling went away after her shed. She has done it on a few sheds since, but always returns to normal. Just out of interest has anyone else experienced this? The vet said he had seen it before in Childreni.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that just before a shed, snakes build up a fluid between the old skin and the new skin to aid in the shedding process. Maybe it was a build up of this fluid?? Just a guess...

Clyde, my big Brisbane got blisters between his new and old skin once. I thought it was due to him soaking for a week before shedding, turned out to be a skin infection which I cannot seem to clear up If you look in my album and look closely at Clyde you can see white spots on him, they were sores after his shed but now have cleared up to just leave whites spots the size of a 5 cent piece, they don't get worse or better anymore.
