Terracotta pots sealant??

just wondering if anyone has used terracotta pots in their snake cages for hides and water bowls? and if so did you use terracotta sealant on the pots to make them waterproof? we put some water in some small pots and they leaked...

i just heard that the sealant could be toxic for animals, does anyone know if this is true? or any way to get around it if it is?

regards
soul

do you have some pots that are sealed already laying around. i dont know much about whats toxic to snakes so i just use what i know is safe.

when i get my marine carpet next month im going to use a terracotta pot as a hide.

if you do seal them leave them in direct sunlight for a week and a bit should do the trick. unless you have a kilim then blast em.

this is only what i would do it hasn't been scientifically proven

soulweaver,
get ceremic sealant from a craft shop (galled glaze, comes in different colours) piain your pots with it then bake it in the oven (time varies from product to product but usually 30mins at 220)

It puts a hard coating on the pot and is waterproof, also doesnt have any fumes etc to harm your reps

Hope this helps ya out

Matt

i do know that some galzes are used for things that you eat off like plates etc - and other glazes are not safe for this so just check with your ceramics supplier and ask for the safe one -

Why not just buy ceramic water bowls, already sealed, no mucking around most petshops have them the biggest one(30cm dia) are about $15, i think.
