Ever since I took the python to school and had a chat with all the kids there they have gone nuts over em! The majority of parties the kids from those grades have been having lately have been reptile parties! The parents are telling me all the time "look what you've done to my child, their obsessed!"
ahhhh....my work here is done! |

well it is about time the media started showing reptiles in a better light, the more of this sort of advertising we can get as a hobby the better it will become.
anyone doing the likes of snake demonstrations or snake parties is already doing a great deal towards improving the hobby, but having more of the media onside will make a huge difference!
keep up the good work.

wonder if you go back far enough in history if dogs were ever painted as bad animals?

When I lived in Greece, the locals were terrified by dogs, but from the way that they are treating the stray dog "problem" in the olympic village, I think that the attitudes may have changed. I?ll have to ask my cousins in the ?old? country more about this.

My brother went to Greece a couple of years ago and said there were heaps of stray dogs and everyone liked them. He had some funny stories about them which made them sound cute and everyone being happy about them all. Are they usually hated and what my brother saw was unusual?

| Yeah, then people can get back to whacking them with shovels and pouring petrol on them.

I'll do some emails and find out, but remember that the attitude in Athens may be different from rural Greece.

Back to the subject ! The article in the newspaper, its in a liftout section called the weekender.
The cover of the weekender has a very good full page photo of a magnificent boyds dragon , mainly the head and shoulders (I think it might be one of URSs breeders). Only a sawn branch indicates that the animal is a captive.
Then there is a two page spread, page one is titled the owners and has a photo of a hand holding a spotted python and a bloke holding a EWD with his young kids patting it. The kids looked nervous, possibly they aren't normally allowed to play with the EWD or maybe it was the camera. Very short article that said nothing .
The next page The Coolest pests
"Reptiles may be cold-blooded but more and more South Australian pet owners are warming to them. PETER WOOD and SCOTT MOORE enter their cool world."
Personally, I hate the term cold-blooded, it is wrong in so many ways but I have to admit that was a good play on words.
Anyhow the article goes on to say that the captive population of reptiles in SA is booming and there might be a (non-threatening) python or monitor living next door. They then talk to some pet shop owners who all claim that business has doubled or tripled in the past 18 months. One says that Steve Irwin is helping to fuel the trade (which is interesting).
The second part of the article is a discussion with URS, my favorite place for reptiles in Adelaide (I don't go there very often because of my drooling problem ). URS explains that you need a easy to get permit, how most people are pleasantly surprised when they first touch a python ("it's not slimy") and some basic reptile care.
And they also mention the various werdos that keep reptiles.
Interestingly, the article states that URS sells 250 creatures a week, I had a chat with them and they confirmed this, but most are frogs and bearded dragons. URS also state that they sell less than 30 venomous reptiles a year.
Then there was the standard article on what you need to start keeping reptiles, a bit too light for me but no misinformation there.
Finally there was an article listing 5 pet shops that sell reptiles, three of which I haven't visited . Each shop lists its best seller (guess) and their personal favorites.
So it looks like the SA reptile trade is booming, if you are thinking of starting a rat farm or beardy ranch, now is the time.
