Can we have a small, serious, and polite discussion not naming anyone or attacking anyone on what it is about coastal carpet pythons that you do like.
Is it any of the morelia species? Or is it a particular type of carpet - clearly the coastal.
Is it because they're common and easy to breed?
Is it because they're not as pretty as other snakes (though in my opinion most coastal poo all over other morelia except maybe darwins).
Is it because they're placid?
Or is it because of....?
Please do answer it for me... But recall - it's about the SNAKE not the people breeding them.
I also don't want to hear from people who hate coastals - only those who have an passion for them, like them, or like? them for whatever reason.
I also don't want this to turn into a debate - I just want reasons for prefering this one type of snake.
And please - serious comments only - I am very keen to learn the psyche of the coastal lover

Well let me start off with this - I have been bitten by coastals - and only coastals have ever bitten me outside of their enclosure!
One of my coastals won't eat sometimes and is fussy.
The other one of my coastals is a lazy eater.
I prefer antaresia...
Sounds like another thread i began reading...
I love em all... equally... |

All of mine feed well.....
And yes all of mine would bite me if I upset them... Thats the natuaral snake re-action....
They are easy to look after as I live in Brissy...And thus little heating is required for them to be happy all year round... |

All are individually marked. i have a couple, one is a fussy eater and only eats mice but has grown at the same rate as the one who eats rats and rabbits. Neither would ever think of biting you (In or out of their enclosures) unless they missed their food item and got you. Believe me I wouldnt get between them and their food tho!!!
Great placid snakes to have!!

There are ugly bredli, ugly jungles, ugly everything. But noone posts pics of ugly ones of those. Coastals are cute! Murray Darlings probably have less colour variation then a coastal but everyone seems to love them??? I love them too i have 3 just saying....

They were probably the most commonly kept python back in the days when other python species were hard to obtain. I think a lot of the older herpers will always be fond of coastals because they were probably the first snake they worked with, whereas a lot of the fledgling keepers these days go straight for the more colourful and expensive pythons (if they can afford it). I have always liked drab coloured snakes so coastals are perfect for me, but even attractively marked individuals appeal to me. A snakes personality is also important to me and i love 'em docile, however i will always like coastals whether they are placid or snappy. I accept them all as being individuals.
I like all Morelia (with diamonds 1st), but i love that coastals can put on girth and obtain chunky heads as they age. Big hefty snakes with chunky heads are the main characteristics that appeal to me with pythons - and coastals have got them! It's also always nice to have a species that breeds easily and produces a relatively large amount of young.
Coastals will always be a great, hardy snake that tolerates husbandry mistakes made by the beginner without too many problems occuring.

Easy to keep and breed....
Easy to handle - well most of them....
The colour variations are many.....
They normally are easy to afford.....
I just love them - but that doesnt mean I don't love our other snakes any less either....
They are all special in their own way - Macs, Jungles, Diamonds etc etc etc................

| | Regular Member | Join Date: Sep-06 Location: Adelaide Gender: | | | | I have a Proserpine Coastal (Lucifer). We also have some Jungles and MD's. But Lucifer is our special boy and always will be.
He was our first python and was an impulse decision (i know i know, smack my wrsit). We went to look in a reptile shop one Sunday because we were bored (and I've alwasy wanted a python). And they had these complete set up deals including snake, and they were very affordable (i imagined it costing much more) and within my reach at last. I really wanted a Diamond, but it would of cost more and the Proserpines were a bit cheaper because they were starting to out grow their click clacks. So any way, we set up a lay by agreement, and while it was being payed off we imerged ourselves in as much information as we possible could, once we'd payed it all off we picked out our snake to be. Four click clacks were brought out and the first one that came out was very calm, but the other three were a bit testy. We picked the calm one only because we were first timers. We knew nothing about nice patterening or colours, we only picked him because we could handle him comfortably. But now that we have an understanding of patterning, I have not seen another coastal that I want more than Lucifer, i think it must of been pot luck because I think he's pretty nice looking.
So in closing I didn't choose to have a coastal, I just wanted a snake and didn't care what kind it was (anything but venemous!!) but I wouldn't swap Lucifer for anything, not even a GTP! One day I would like to breed him if I could find a nice female Proserpine for him, I believe in keeping the line pure.
Here's Lucifer so you can all appreciate what I love about him.
