thermometer question

hi guys just a question in regards to thermometers i have on the outside of my enclosure (900Lx600Hx400W)one of the aquarium thermometers that you stick to the glass and they have some sort of heat sensing liquid i am guessing these are not the most accurate way to determine temperature are they? as i have one i havent stuck to the glass and placed it inside the tank it read 34 degrees whilst the one stuck on the glass up the hot end was only 27 then i moved the inside one down the cooler end it said 30 should i be looking at getting some kind of probe thermometer to initialy set up the tank don't want to spend oodles of money what is the go here? your thoughts most appreciated
warm regards
symon

I just scored a heap of room thermometers from a $2 shop for 99c ea . Have put them everywhere . Also have expensive reptile and scientific types and guess what . They all read the same . l check hot end , cool end and room temp just to be sure .

I got some "opti" brand thermos from valley reptiles , they work great ,around $8 each .
As for the little round ones i think you have , i personally would not bother using them .
But spend a few dollars for one as the correct heat is important to the health of your animals .

Hello

Hello,

Digital probes or temp guns are very accurate ways to measure the temps, especially on the basking spots.

The tape thermometers well for fish tank because the glass is the same temperature as the water. I think the would be pretty inaccurate with air behind as they would report a value somewhere between the inside and outside temperatures which would be about as useful as flipping a coin.

I have the $6 ones from the Herp Shop in most of my enclosures and find them very useful.

This month's Herp Shop special may also be of interest to you. It is ideal for sussing out and making a temperature map of your enclosures... besides it includes a laser pointer which makes it way cool to use! (Click the link in my signature to check it out.)
