hello..
i'm thinking of getting a probe thermostat, a heat mat, and heating cord.. i was just wondering.. can i plug both a heat mat and heating cord into the one thermostat? or is that a no-no?? sorry if this is a newby question... but i'm a newby so...
Take care. Have fun.

RE: thermostat

Megan, Not sure wether its a no-no or not but Ive got a heat mat and a heat globe using the same thermostat via a dbl adaptor. Ive never had an issue with it. Not sure if others have though

cheers

RE: thermostat

Depending upon the way in which you set them up, you could do it, but if they are heating different things in different areas, you might find that the temperature of the thing without the thermostat probe (eg the heat cord if the probe is on the heat mat) constitently stays too cold, too warm or fluctuates wildly. Having said that, a friend of mine keeps his black headed pythons on heat cord which is controlled by a thermostat with the probe in his gecko enclosures... seems a little crazy to me, but it works... sort of... (I recently pulled out his heat gun and showed him how hot it was, he was very suprised!)

If you can afford to shell out for an extra thermostat, you'll probably be better off, but if you are clever with your design you may well get away with one quite nicely.

Good luck, Megan.

RE: thermostat

I dont use a thermostat on any of my heat cords. I tested them for several days with a thermometer directly on top of a heat cord and found them to get no hotter than 37 - 38 degrees.

thermostats

If you use a 0 to 40 on a heat mat whether its actually on it or on the bottom of plastic container placed on top of heat pad the floor will actually hotter than what it registers with probe. This is cause there not made to register floor heat just air temp,if you want to accurately measure floor temp there is habistat matstat. If you use say 30 watt small length heat pad you must use thermastat cause when you place your hand on it it feels hot and for snakes thats not good it should feel just warm with your hand so the snake can gradually heat up.A mate of mine has heat gun and showed me look its 30 something for his bhp and when i placed my hand on it you could feel its too hot.Like think of the wattage verses overall size if you use 60 watt x about 4ft an about foot wide it gets warm and the thermostat placed away from it onley turns it off when the overall temp gets too hot in summer.30 watts in small length and width gets hot hot. and use thermastat or cook and burn.Others answered quiz i thought ide add other related so we could think a bit.

I use a couple of heat mats and use a probe thermostat for each one. JMO
