Thermostats are a complete waste of money unless you are using them in an incubator IMO.
If you want one for some reason get a dimming one they cost over $100 but if you have to much money why not?

Others think they are great things.

Diamonds generally like it a bit cooler but I don't keep them so maybe someone else will be able to give you some more exact temps but I don't think you want to be going over 30.

A thermostat is recommended and can be bought for about $30 from places like the herp shop and their not that hard to wire up.

Yes get yourself a good quality thermostat, that is a little high for a Diamond really. In the mean time use a smaller light bulb to bring the temperature down a bit. I would recommend a Microclimate or Habistat brand, expensive but worth it.

For winter I would put the enclosure on a timer to turn of the heat at night. Providing the enclosures are inside your house, they should only get as low (in temp) as the ambient temperature in the room. Have the heat on during the day but you don't want it to reach 30 deg, you want just enough heat so if they want to warm up they can get under the heat source.

he doesnt have a light... where his enclosure is (my room) the sun is on his enclosure for a few hours of the day so he can bask in that if he wants but usually just stays on the heat mat

With the digital timers on the market these days you can get by without a thermostat if you want to, But you do need to monitor the temps and adjust your timer to keep your heat radiating devices to their optimum temps.

So what you are saying is instead of using a digital thermostat use a digital timer and keep watching the temperature and manually adjust the timer when it gets too hot ? Wouldn't it be easier to use a good reliable thermostat ?

The snakes do that themselves they are actually very clever in that way. All you need is a way for them to get warm without heating the cool end up much or at all.

When room tempertures get up around 30 you just turn the heating off like you should even if you have a thermostat.

mate your not home 24/7 and $100 is nothin compared to buying another diamond when yours dies of too much heat. all it takes is one burst of heat for some reason for a couple of hours and its all over.

When you have a enclosure on a thermostat it will keep the temp up so if a hot burst does come the enclosure will get too hot alot faster than mine that wont have the heat on.

Also it isnt the money that puts me off the thermostats its the fact that they cant be trusted and that they arnt needed that i dont use them. Failure isnt likely but its happened to me and im not going to let it happen again, i was very lucky it happened in winter or i would have killed my snake.
