Thermostats?

Hi guys, I have recentaly made a enclosure for my new-coming Children's Python. Now I need a tthermostat for it, and I need help choosing one. See I am going to be using a heat lamp, infra-red, but not sure what wattage. It is a 3ftX2X2, and will need temperature controlling. I do not want to spend to much money buy I still want adiquate heating. Any ideas?

I was looking at one of those cheaps ones, but they only go up to 30*c, and Children's need it ujp to 34-35, so they are pointless.

Hello again, I added a pic earlier of those I am using and they go up to 60 deg c but the price is the killer, although they are a 2 probe unit and a single is available and would be cheaper, I paid just under 220 each for mine but they run a 100w infa red heat to 34deg and a heat mat as well. Attached pic shows the unit

hey again, that looks very good, but I think its out of my price range. I was looking at the Microclimate Ministat 300 http://valleyreptilesupplies.com.au/...emart&Itemid=1
Do you think this would be good for what I am doing?

microclimate or habitstat 100's.
Both under $100 (around 80) and both do up to 100watts of power.
Choice is a wonderful thing

Hi I looked at the Microclimate Ministat 100, but it only works with heat mats and heat cord, will it still work at I want to use a Infra-red lamp.

If a t-stat only goes to 30 the u can install it in the cool end of your enclosure. Set it for say 26 and measure what the hot end maintains at and adjust accordingly.

Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest. If you make sure the temp probe is in the middle of the enclosure set to reach around 30C then your hot end should be 33C(ish) and your cool end around 25 - perfect! Make sure you spend a 24 hour period monitoring temps throughout before you put your snake in!

probe thermostats

You can get thermostats next to nothing at second hand water beds stores, they already fixed with a probe, just tell them what its for and that your not using it for a water bed as it will be second hand and that you will be using a safety cut off switch, its just that there not aloud to sell second hand thermostats for water beds. i dont have any but my mate dose and they work really well and he paid $5 he has several of them not one has faild him in the past.
try and get the latest seconds
or you could just pay an arm and a leg like i did and get the same thing.
good luck
cheers steve

For a 3ft enclosure with lamps I don't use thermos at all. Find a rock, get a cheap $6 thermometer and put it under the lamp. Try different height rocks / hollows until you get the required temp. The snake will happily sit up on the log / rock to heat up & move to cool off. Using a rock is better because it will warm up also. Lamps don't like the on / off effect of thermos and blow more often. Just something to think about. It works for me.
