Should you provide plenty of hiding places in your reptile enclosure or none at all ? Fluffy, my juvenile Carpet has plenty of hides and that's exactly where she stays. If she happens to be roaming around and someone enters the room, she is straight off to her favourite hide. I'm thinking this might be a good thing for her peace of mind, but a bad thing in getting her acustomed to humans.
Any thoughts ?
Cheers

we give several too, one in the cool end one in the middle and one in the warm end. you find that as they get older they won't hide as much. try shredded paper in the enclouse as well and see what happens. with ours we find they feel safer because there is somewhere to hide whilst moving around.
that is all |

it is definitely a good thing to have hides! without them you will have a very freaked out snake. the only time my diamond python has ever tried to bite me was when i removed his hides when he was a baby during a feed (that was just me being inexperienced and thinking he might fall off his log when he struck it lol). and he is an extremely placid snake. to get them used to humans you just gotta make sure you get him/her out regularly to get it used to being handled. they will gradually get used to you walking past their enclosure.

While we are on the subject, will a snake not take a feed if there is no hides in the feeding box? i have recently moved my hatchies to a new enclosure, the male took a bigger feed than usual but the female has refused 2 nights in a row, its not like her at all. I used to just feed her in her old enclosure and she never refused, in fact she was really ferocious at feeding time (as ferocious as a little girl snake can be...lol). Should i take the other snake out and just feed her in the enclosure she is in? or should i put a few hides in the feed box so she knows she can hide?
Any suggestions?
Cheers, Alan.

Shermy.
I've been told, and seen, that just changing their enclosure will put them off food for a while.
Even changing the waterbowl or putting in something new.
Anyone else found that?

I provide hides, however even if I direct my snake inside them, he comes straight out. He just sits on his branch all day without a care in the world :p |

Thanks Folks,
A wealth of info here, I agree with the concensus that plenty of hides and lots of handling (depending on the last feed) will hopefully produce a contented placid snake. Sobrien, your snake sounds claustrophobic, what kind is it ?
cheers

It's a plain old coastal (proserpine form). I don't know why, he just likes to be seen I guess.
