To use a Thermostat or not to use a Thermostat

Hi Guys just looking for some advise on Thermostats.......

I have thermostats in most of my Reps cages & I was looking at getting an other one...

But some people say yes to them & some say no to them....

What is your advice for me (be nice)

This one would be for a 6 foot tank for my water dragons so my question is:

To use a Thermostat or not to use a Thermostat
what does everyone think??

Nope not needed sit with a thermometer for an hour then see how long it takes to reach the right temp. Then go to bunnings setup an electric time u get 2 for $10. voila turns on and off.. and a lot CHEAPER

no offence but i think that's a pretty scummy way of doing things IMO. Why not just get $25 or around and get a proper thermostat and not risk your reptiles life?

Well u can have a look at the old thread that TrueBlue made one of the biggest breeders doesnt use one? Well its summer in sydney and upstairs it gets 30-36 degress so there is no need! and thermostats can malfunction as well dan19 im sure u are aware of that

Yeah here we go The biggest breeders in the country seem to favour them, like anything they CAN malfunction but so can a timer.

yes i am aware but more likely a home brand timer will malfunction 99% more of the time then a good thermostat, and also for most snakes 36 degrees is way too hot for both hot end and cold end so you would prob need one of those fanning thermostats or whatever they are.

Every single object that requires power or energy is prone to failure its natural. I mean look at uV bulbs sometimes you get duds and sometimes you dont.

bcurko - That is a terrible suggestion...a VERY inaccurate way of regulating heat - how do you account for the different temperatures on different days or different times of day...

...what do you do when there is a sudden cold spell...?

Wow ,1 breeder doesnt use them. 2 timers for $10 from bunnings Quality. Ill back my thermostat to provide the temps i want anyday over cheap imported no quality controlled timers. Not everyone comes from a warm climate and if u look Gail mac comes from SA.North or south who knows but who has time to sit for hours to watch and record temp up and temp down. Every day is different lower ambients require longer on times and vice versa.
Im with dan on this one .Scummy

Gail - Get a thermostat - if nothing else, a basic one (approx $30) but I would definately recommend the better quality thermostats (Microclimates, Habistats etc) and particularly those that 'dim' your heat source - you have far better control over your temps...keep an eye out and you can pick up some good deals...

...honestly, the initial outlay is worth it for the quality - and not knowing and regulating your temps can be much more expensive. A snake with RI costs quite a bit in Vet bills and medication...
