Top End Herping

Hi,
Well I'm off to Darwin next Friday for a couple of weeks. I've been to the top end a couple of times, the last being 7 years ago. Any tips about good places to see herps would be welcome (pms perhaps?). The general plan is to travel though Lichfield, down to Katherine (perhaps out to Victoria River) then back up through Kakadu and the Mary River area.
Also I'd love to meet up with any lizard enthusiasts

Bob

You will find all sorts just about everywhere. Best tip is to go somewhere around a water source, say within 500m to 1km. late afternoon and early morning seems best for elapids and night for pythons. Good luck seeing any monitors, i was at Wangi falls in Litchfeild nat park earlier in the week and didn't see one. The cane taods have really decimated their population. But i did see a couple of Mcleay's.

Crocs are pretty plentiful in all the areas you're going so you should see lots of them... Just don't get too close to waters edge.

Hey cheers waruikazi. Pity about the goannas at Wangi. Last time we were camping there it was the last major storm of the 2000 wet. Certainly no swimming for us. This will be my first time in the dry so hoping to see a different environment. We had a few serious storms as we passed through across the top of aus early in 1990, but still managed 3 weeks camping in Kakadu, with most roads and campsites open. When there's bloody water everywhere there are few places to swim, what with those crocodile notices . Gave me the heegie beegies...

Well guys now I'm back and time to post a few holiday shots. The cane toads have certainly affected the goanna numbers since last I was there, but still managed to see some amazing wildlife.

The most tragic event was the fact that my daughter caught twice as many barra as me including the biggest.
