trimming nails

my bearded dragons nails are growning longer and its starting to hurt when i handle him . i know with dogs not to cut the dark area because its a vein, is it the same with lizard? my lizards dark area on his claws reach the very tip. please help.

Now there is one terrific straightforward informative site! hope it went ok, ps i wonder if a bit of fine sandpapaer wrapped around climbing branches would help, like used in bird cages????

I dont know wonder if it would put to much stress on the animal, if it isnt a medical problem I would leave them
