hey all. i was heading around to all my local petstores today to have a look for a staffy and when i went into the living jungle in dandenong i had a look in their reptile section, the turtle tank (with only 1 turtle) had a tiny little dry dock and in the tank there was an adult turtle with what looked like a lawn growing out of it. i figure its an advanced algae or something but it almost covered its entire shell. its bright green and about 10-15mm long. is it really bad husbandry? or a common occurence in turtles? i was under the impression all turtles need a large spot to heat up and avoid algae growth.

You would only see algae growing on their shells if they have been kept outside, and yes, they need somewhere to get dry and warm, but it doesn't have to be huge.

Hi Michael,
The algae is harmless and quite common.
Provided the turtle can get out of the water and sit on the dry area, it is probably just adequate in size.
Several Victorian pet shops used have a tendency to put only a small amount of water in their tank, so the turtles could walk but not swim.
Do the pet shops still do this, or have they realised that turtles are aquatic animals that swim?
Regards,
Michael.

thanks michael (top name isn't it?)
this tank is probably 900mm long x 600mm deep and 600mm high (not accurate thats just my memory) the water would have been about 300mm deep. so it was well and truely deep enough. not having kept turtles before i didnt know if it was common it just seemed to be a weird coincedence that the turtle had the growth and such a small dock. thanks for the answers.
